I was reading what Great White did to his truck and started surfing on that subject. I came across the Airdog stuff.
Looks like a sweet setup to me , all in one package small and neat..

Now the newbie to the Guru's ...

What are your thoughts on this product.

Is it overkill ?

Anyone running this setup ?

It's a nice setup. Just depends on your finances. Bill Heath runs a Fass himself(Airdogs father). I , like GW run a Raptor which is the same LP minus the filtration. The Full blow airdog does lower air in the fuel and cavitation which kills VP44 IP's . No know research on whether any benefits to a Stanadyne Pump but the Stanadynes are reasonably tougher and don't have the diaprham issues of a VP44. Many here have run months with no working LP at all and not even realized it. A VP44 won't last long under those circumstances. On the other hand the stock LP's are not that good to begin with and the Walbros don't seem to last very long either from some of the threads I have read. a Raptor has a lifetime warranty. Do you need it ? No Is it nice to have ? Probably.
Cumminalong(Doghouse diesel) can get a pretty good deal on them if your looking. Shoot him a PM.

Thanks aceneights1,

But I think I read somewhere on GW famous thread that the entire setup with the Raptor, lines etc cost him a pretty penny.. We are planning on doing some pretty decent traveling with this Burb and reliability is my main concern. I did like with the Air Dog of having the filtration with the LP..

A Raptor can be had for about 350-399$ depending on where you get it for a kit. I paid 200$ for mine brand new thanks to the scumbags at Lee's Auto ranch in ellington CT. Long Story...I think if you can get a dealer to get it for you as a standalone piece probably cheaper. It is a serious LP for sure. Also it is flow on fail. Trsut me on that. ask my old Dodge...

Famous? My thread?

Nah, I'm just a squirrel trying to get a nut.....:)

Personally, I think the airdog setup is too much for our trucks considering the benfit you would get for the cost, but it would also work great if you installed one. Just make sure it's adjustable, our trucks like somewhere around 10 psi at the inlet.

Plus, the filter choices and suppliers are much more limited than say, a racor, which can be had almost anywhere if your filter ever waxes up.

I've got about 700 bucks into my whole system, from tank to injector pump.

Breakdown is something like this:

raptor kit - 400 bucks (included 16 feet of 1/2 push lok hose, fittings and some wiring)
FTB ver2.0 - roughly 100 bucks (walking J)
Prefilter - roughly 100 bucks (ebay snatch)
New stock filter - 50 bucks (stanadyne from a local shop)
Miscellaneous fittings, wiring and bits- 50-75 bucks

If you're worried about reliabilty and breaking down, here's what I would do:

Install a 10 micron prefilter, probably a racor due to ease of sourcing replacement filters. Then, I'd chuck a spare lift pump into the glove box just for good measure.

The advantages of this is that prefiltering fuel seems to (by others reports) extend the life of the lift pump several times over. By keeping the stock lift pump, if you break down swapping one in is a job anyone can do and parts are going to be much easier to get than say.....a raptor 100.

My system was built with a eye towards adding more performance in the future. If you're going for a reliable driver that's easy to fix, stay close to stock for ease of sourcing replacement parts nearly anywhere.

Well, stock-ish, except for a good prefilter that is....

;)

One last note:

Raptors are no longer lifetime warranty. 1 year only now...:mad5:

Not sure what that means for those that bought before they switched to 1 year warranty........:???:

No I understood, just don't think you'll ever need it. Raptor is a damn good LP....:D
we are the only two so far that I know of running them. When I need a new LP for either the Burb or Dually I'll spend the money although based on what you reported I think I will buy the LP standalone and make my own install kit.

I recommended he keep the stock lift pump....

I missed the part about the warranty too.. Damn...That is what I get for watching Star Trek at the same time I am typing. That sucks.

I think you misunderstood. I recommended throwing a stock lift pump in the glove box .

A spare raptor is just too expensive for that!

:)

Sort of my thinking behind the parallel pump setup both have to crap out for me to lose all fuel delivery assist, and GM pump is common any part store availability, and Walbros are roadside rebuildable if need be with the spare part kit I have.

Ok I will bite,,, how would that pre filter work, in order to help the LP.. Ok I just answered my own dumb question, so the prefilter is before the LP.. Does that prefilter also remove water ??

Yup, the prefilter keeps the crud out of the pump, thus lengthing it's life (or so the theory goes;))

Water separating really depends on the filter media.

Some have coalescing media in it, some don't.

Filter bowls aren't necessarily and indication of water separating ability, but water will settle into the bowl overnight if it's in the fuel.

Same as if you pour oil into a bottle of water and shake it, then let it sit. The water settles out to the bottom. The big plus of the bowl is it has a drain you can use to drain the water off.

Well, you can also see the water so you have an idea if you've gotten a bad load of fuel (water content) or not....

Sounds nice! Will the water not freeze in winter??? (It gets mighty cold here ) Does it have an indicator ?? So I guess a good prefilter is the way to go here..

Again thanks to all that have helped, what a great forum!
