Any new news or experience on turbo's or pumps on the new amg p 400

Hey fellow diesel nuts, I've been busy lately and want to start working on my Suburban engine swap. I've searched the site for anything related to the P400 but can't find anything new since my last visit in March or April. Any body seen or heard anything? I need to pick a turbo and fit it before I pull the old (50K mi.) motor out. Has AMG made anymore upgrades as to date so I can squeeze 400 HP out of one without a chase vehicle and trailer?
 
lots of turbos can provide enough air for 400 hp and i would talk to a performance diesel turbo supplier for the best fitting one for your application. an hx40 or a holset vgt turbo will support 400 hp if you want to keep it cheap. the only pump that could supply you with enough fuel for 400 hp is a db4 but you would need to find one with a throttle assembley for road use like mikek3500 has. saying that i think a p400 as it sits now could probably hold 400 hp as long as you upgrade the valvetrain for the likely high rpms you will have to run to achieve 400 hp. you also need to be able to cool the engine when its making 400 hp and that could be hard
 
I have been told by the guys that build pumps for Peninsular that they can't get as much fuel from a DB4 as a DB2 and I have one of thier highest output DB2 pumps that they have produced. I tried to search for mikek3500 but no results. I was going to put an HX35 on it but I saw a turbo off of a CR Cummins so I am going to look into that setup. Keep the opinions coming, going to order the P400 soon!
 
I think there is a reason Stanadyne went to 4 plungers after a certain size 2 plunger. On the four plungers the size is limited,because they will hit each other.

The four plunger pump size is limited mostly by the drive pressure of the four pistons. You can fit some large pistons in a DB4 / DS4 pump. As you increase the circumference of the pistons in a four piston pump you increase the load on the drive for the pump head and you increase load on the engine to drive the pump, and the load on the rollers not to mention the cam ring. ( waiting for the slams on this one) You also run into how much fuel you can flow through the fixed size transfer slots in the period of time that the slots are lined up, then flowing through the transfer passages to the pump line adapters. Lots of reasons that just increasing the plunger size does not increase performance.

You then need a program for the DS4 that can time the electric spill solenoid quick enough to be able to use the new pressures and fuel flow. Yeah a just few things to think about. :eek:
 
The DS4 cam pin is very thick compared to the DB2, the DB4 pin just a little smaller then the DS4. I can hardly wait till the Tahoe is done,and I can start building a pump .

The drive pin shearing is from the cyclical loading on the pin when you increase the load on the drive pin by increasing the piston circumference, you also increase the pressure rise. Lots of things to think of. :skep:

Already done, if you want a head built let me know I will get you a head made up with up to 3/8 pistons in it. you have to have the pump set up though. Cost to have a set of pistons made up and fitted is around 500 dollars. Yeah lots of things I have been doing or have done.
 
FWIW I talked to Peninsular awhile back and they told me the same thing, that I would not like the drivablity of the DB4 and I would be better off having them build me a custom DB2.
 
Slim is the cam pin the part they talk about shearing when running wvo? If so can a DS4 cam pin be put in a DB2 to avoid shearing from thicker wvo or thermal shock? Sorry if its a bad question but I am new to diesels. Thanks
 
Never seen a cam pin shear on a stock pump. But thermal shock will seize the head and rotor,and snap the pump shaft.

hmmmm, now that is interesting slim.... which core/pump is needed? a 2829 or a 2831 ? are these ceramic coated and /or hardened as well?
