Another exciting day owning a 6.5!

Well it allways seems like something comes up and I don't have time. The one time this week I thought I had some time it was pouring rain all day.
Anyway I wiil make a point to do something tomorrow with it and possibly today if I get back before dark.

I have had good luck with the stock gm one. The factory one lasted about ten years with commercial plowing, replaced it with a stock replacement thats still going.

Is the CS-144 alt. a direct bolt on for my 96 burb? Does anyone have the Autozone part number? Thinking of upgrading mine.

Scott, the CS144 is not a bolt in deal on the 96&^. I just did an upgraded alt on my 96 though. It will take the 140 amp alt from the 01-02 Dmax. Its a bolt on/plug and play for 96&^ except for the rear bracket. The Dmax does not use a rear bracket, so if they don't then I felt good not running one too. It has two big bosses cast into it unlike the 96, it has one.
On a 88-95 CS144 you do need a rear bracket for sure though.

Finally had alittle time to play with the rear bracket. It is just a turnbuckle used (i think) for tightening fences/gates. I got this at Lowes for about $5-8?
You will need to bend the appropriate angles in the eyes and I welded a washer to them also. The eyes only come in a large diameter so the washer brings it down to the right size.
Hope this helps. If there is a demand for a bracket I could develop a system for them using steel brackets. I would need atleast 10 orders to make it worth the time to set up the plasma torch.

I have a alternator question......why is this big ole diesel engine alternator so weak? My alt gauge bounces with the signal like some folks have mentioned on here. Its a diesel and requires no electricity to run and my Mercedes has a tiny lil thing for a alternator and I have added a straight 12 volt resisitance injector line heaters and a straight resistance fuel filter heater wrapping and I have no problem with the battery. According to what I read here if I put resistance injector heaters and a fuel filter heater on my truck I will probably have problems so what gives?

105 amps is not so bad, but the problem is that this alternator puts out so little at idle. It doesnt put out 100 amps at idle. Partly due to the large pulley on it needed of the tachometer to read correctly. A smaller pulley would help to get more juice at idle, but screw up the tach to read too high, because the alternator would be spinning faster than before.

Thats a nice setup....What would the package cost, complete?.....Turnbuckle bent and fabbed up w/ washers, CS144 w/ Correct pully?

I just want to know were you got that spacer?

Thanks Buddy. So what does the CS144 put out? I thought the advantage to alternators over the old timey generators was a alternator put out the same thing all the time?

At idle generators do not put out enough voltage to exceed battery voltage and are not turned on. They over speed and kick out at higher RPM as the residual magnetic field they have generates too much voltage. (Boil the battery dry and burn up the generator windings.) You could not get much current out of them because the windings were all in the center presenting cooling issues and the brushes have to carry 100% of the output. More current = shorter brush life. I recall alternators have 6 Amps max going through the brushes.

Alternators put out some current at idle. The bigger ones put out more current at idle. The CS 144 is rated at ~140 amps (can vary) vs. the 100 or 105 amps of ours. Better bearings and more cooling are advantages of the 144 and 130D. (older SI units had better bearings and were more reliable except for eating brushes.) Keep in mind batteries only take 6 amps each to maintain charge after starting. The rest of the electrical system is where the output goes. Discharged batteries being charged by an alternator is a sure way to overheat and cook the alternator's diodes - failure is closer after doing this as overheating electronics is cumulative damage. For example a light bulb burning 10% cooler will last like 10 times longer.

Diesels are designed with longer trips in mind as well as economy. Thus a larger pulley on the alternator to cut power loss. After all the diesel should run longer with more time to charge batteries than a gasser. The pushed to the thermal limit CS130 gets another 6 amp draw from the second battery at lower RPM for cooling plus the extra cranking and GP loads. (And I thought the one on my 1993 v6 gasser failed often! No, not as often as I smoke em out here on the diesel!!!)

Thanks Warwagon I am a learnin! So sounds like when I finish my wvo conversion it wont be long before I will be putting in a CS144! Wonder how much they will cost? Its a plug n play if Leroy does the plasma torch brace thing right?

Luis,
If I did anything it would be just the turnbuckle or a bracket system. Alt can be bought local for less than I could sell +shipping.
Pulley can be swaped from old to new. I would charge $25 for a moded turnbuckle.

Marty,
I got the spacer for some other project years ago from Lowes or Home depot?? Its actually 1 1/8" long.

Orrum,
Its pretty much plug and play out of the box. Just need a rear bracket for the most part. Some have wanted another stronger bracket instead of flipping the tensioner strap and adding a spacer. If I can get enough interest I'll look into a bracket kit.

I need so many things for my truck and have so little money and I really stink as a mechanic! LOL But u guys make me look like a rock star to my friends! U oughta see how many people have copied my OPS mod and LP primer button! Its very easy to copy by looking at it but I like to never understood it in writing! LOL

I have been looking and found that the 140amp has a different plug connector that is square , mine is a more oval shape. I found a square connector at a parts store with 4 wires . But before I go cutting do you mean that the d-max alt. has the same oval plug in as well?

The one I got was a plug and play. Same connector. Are you looking for the 01-02 Dmax alt?

Leroy, I had looked at alt. before and could only find the 140 amp square plug in style for my year model which doesnt work do to the connector style. Thats what I was trying to confirm that the connector and mounting is the same. Found this one at autozone DL1926-16-4 for a 02 dmax listed at 130 amp but rated at 145 amp. That will be too easy if its plug and play!

Yes thats right its 130 amp. It will bolt on and plug in. No rear bracket though.
