An account of Borgeson's Part # 000936 two unsuccessful attempts to kill me.

I installed a Part # 000936 for 92-'94 Full Size Chevy, GMC Truck and have had serious "slop" in the steering wheel two times and one of the slop issues resulted in near lock up of the steering.


This past week I backed out of the driveway and turning left then right to straighten I noted it suddenly felt like the belt came off the power steering pump. This caused me to cross over into the other lane and dynamite the brakes. I then spun the steering wheel over both ways to make sure steering still worked. I backed up to the drive way and looked under the hood. The steering shaft got hold of the front differential vent hose and tore it clean off. GM's plastic shield of this shaft doesn't fit over the larger rag joint Borgeson uses so one leaves it off.

On repair of the vent hose I discover why it's been fine for 5+ years and now suddenly rips the vent hose off. What is wrong with this picture?

So the missing fastener caused the rag joint to swing out of it's normal circle and catch the vent hose. The hose failed at the plastic diff vent by splitting rather than snapping it off. I had a spare hose in stock from the 1993 total loss.

It's of record the loose upper column connection caused by the hollow shaft collapsing under the flawed set screw design of theirs vs. a through bolt GM uses. Regardless despite using locknuts on the upper shaft bolts they decided to use star lock washers and regular nuts on the lower shaft bolts with the "stops". DUH! Lockwashers going through rubber that can flex isn't going to work! Both of the flawed fastener design and application got "Requires special tools or heat to remove." Red Loctite. You have to use vise grips on the stop bolts to remove and reinstall as Borgeson did not provide wrench flats on it.
 
I think you can to a Dodge shaft transplant or should say know you can, but can't remember if it will fit 92-94 or the 95-00?
 
FERMS fix is the best IMO, covers over rags is to keep oil/other fluids from compromising the rubber, lest we forget almost everything these days "new" appear to be a compromise......

The upper U-joint rubber rotted off the OEM shaft I had so this was the best course of action without knowing the other alternatives at the time.

Borgeson should have used locknuts for the two double duty stop bolts. Short of that and the difficulty to R&R the shaft the Red Loctite is my recommendation to others running this setup.
 
So silly question, but what is wrong with the OEM shaft?

I hate to admit it, but I dont even know what holds it together. All of mine are relatively tight so I dont kick a sleeping dog.
 
I wonder if the U~joint steering shaft, from the Jeep would fit these like they do the older GM square body trucks that had the rag joint.
I do not remember the year and model number of the jeeps they came off of.
I think to make them fit the square body GMz, the steer wheel end of the GM shaft needed to be trimmed back a half an inch or so.
