That is so true. I spent from February through April last year working in Little Falls, MN. I was in shock at the amount of rust on cars and trucks there. Basically, after 5 years all vehicles are full of cancer there. The expression "rust belt" really sinks in.

This also explains why 38 million people live in California and more are hopping the fence every day.:nonod::nonod::nonod:

There ARE tricks to keeping a vehicle looking good in a salted northern winter but it's not easy and it's not forever. I'm ending winter #7 now and I will be able to get it looking pretty good as soon as I can be assured the salt onslaught is over. My PYOs are still 95%+ good too.

My jimmy is my winter ride, the salt raised hell with it. It needs a lot of body panels welded in and new front fenders.

We had 6" of fresh snow in the local mountains last Friday. Today it hit 70 F up there and it's 81 F down where I live in Fullerton. I'm mowing lawn, weeds, etc.

3 weeks back I caught and released a 13 lb 4 oz largemouth bass, a pre-spawn fish. So it's spring time here.
 
I thought the alcoas were marked with alcoa

They have a blue metal sticker by the valve stem, but they don't always stay on.

If you get a set, but the Alcoa center caps. Expensive, but you won't regret it. The aftermarket center caps loosen and make all sorts of noise.
 
So I have a set of these PYOs that I'm trying to get rid of. Had two buyers back out due to the corrosion from peeled off clear coat. So I started into refinishing them. I used Bix Stripper to do one wheel and it's a PITA. The clear coat does not willingly come off with Bix and I layed plastic over it, bagged it and let it sit for hours, recoated it with stripper, used steel wool, plastic scraper, etc. The best removal method was my thumbnail, but that only lasts so long.

I'm looking for easier ways to get the clear coat off. Would I get into trouble taking a Mapp Gas torch to this stuff?

Once this clear stuff is off, I'm polishing them and leaving them uncoated. Next buyer can decide what to do with them. Frankly, they clean up pretty nice with polishing compound and you'd have to do that once or twice a year. The clear coat is awful as it keeps people from doing the polishing when bare spots develop and that leads to corrosion and pitting. So it should be all coated and constantly touched up, or not coated at all. Also, the peeling clear coat is not always due to balancing weights. I found that much of the peeling just starts at the outer lip of the wheel where it transitions to inside. No way to keep the clear on there. Just a bad concept from the outset.
 
Sanding the clear coat helped the stripper work. Its still takes forever though. I don't even have 2 done yet, just to time consuming. Within the next 2 weeks I hope to have them done and on.
 
OK, but I'm just trying to remove the clear coat. There is minor pitting and most of it comes out with polishing. Here is the one I've done (no clear coat):

Lot of work to try and sell some rims. Two of the tires have about 1/3 tread left. I may run those plus some Alcoas I have with tires that have good tread, but are age dated. I figure anything I get out of them is gravy as no one is going to pay me for tires. Then I'll sell the rims.

Honestly, here in CA the clear coat is a waste of time. Just polish once or twice a year.
