Alternator went out while towing to San Diego. Made it back, but losing juice. Which alternators are the best? I put an Autozone on the '95 and have had no prolems, but I've read many complaints on them.

Dont get an OEM one, go to this place and get a higher ouptut built one from them
You have to specify to them that you need the one ear and one foot for mounting and it has to have a 2-5/8" (67mm) 6-groove pulley. They screwed up mine because they just asked for the vehicle and whatever they use to look up was wrong, so you have to tell them.
Here is the 140 amp upgrade, and they have a 170amp for $40 more

Or that place sells all kinds of parts to fix your own or upgrade your own. Even an adjustable voltage regualtor 14.7 +/- 1V, so you can tweak it if it goes down over time.
That will work for his 95, but the 99 is a different animal all together. If this is in fact for the 99, then I would HIGHLY suggest upgrading to the AD244 alternator which you can buy for an 01 DURAMAX as the 130 amp option. It corrects all of the faults that the CS series alternators had, and has great output at idle. Also it is a direct bolt in with zero modifications needed. Also the REMY I bought from ADVANCE for the 01 DMAX came with the correct size pulley on it for the diesel as my tach is pretty close(for the most part).
I bought a REMY from ADVANCE for my BURB after all of the problems I've had with the remans from everybody. The REMY was a brand new unit with no core charge, and looks to be a nice piece without the made in mexico sticker on it.
For 99, use the CS130D or CS144 or AD244.
The store that Buddy mention, sells all of them. As a matter of fact, they sell all type of alternator.
Looks like Advance may have change their choices since Thefermenator bought his.
140A is already a lot for many application (stock) unless you are running a whole bunch of amplifier, etc. I don't think you are plowing, knowing your location.
I think 140 amp is good, obviously way better than stock. But I would go with 170amp if I was buying new. That way it has more output at idle, since they would normally put small pulleys on them to increase output at idle. But our tach runs on the pulley size so we cant do that.
It is important to specify pulley size and mounting type. What is the mounting on 96+ trucks? Is it one 2" foot and one ear at 240 degrees? Unlike 94-95 which is one 2" foot and one ear at 120 degrees to be on the driver side.
A crappy alternator sure can bring MPG's down. I wonder if the 99 will shape up MPG wise for you now ????
I also plow and have over 50-60 marker light bulbs, strobes, rear floods, and the stock 120 or 105 whatever it is does the job. More would be nice, but with 2 batteries and a high idle switch its really no big deal. It may stress the stock jobber some... I have AZ alternator now, and plowed through last winter with it and its still holding true.
I do keep my old core that I had locally rebuilt with me though.
Too late, order is done. They did not offer pulley size options.
But you could probably have commented on the order, or call them. The 144 I ordered from them came witha pulley so small my tach read 1000rpm high. And although they have the correct mount in stock, they sent me one with the wrong mounting.
