Alternator bench tests good but does not charge

Ok heres how us hillbillys diagnose and repair alternators. First stick a screwdriver or wrench to the back of the alternator while the vehicle is running, if the magnet grabs and holds it the alternator is good. If the magnet doesnt grab it and hold it then give the altinator a couple good taps with a hammer or good big wrench, if the brushes are stuck this shakes em loose and the alternator starts charging, to check for charging place metal wrench against magnet like above. If alternator has a bad bearing then when u hit it with the hammer the shaft will slap over against the housing and the most beautiful pile of aluminum shavings will fly out. Based on this or the lack of charging when u tap it take it to the alternator shop and rebuild it. See thats why yall want me to listen and learn all these fancy ways of doing things, u dont want me giving advice! LOL I bet Ace has done this type testing back in the "day" ?

You forgot a moonshine break...:rof:
BTW I have heard of that on old Leece Nevilles. I don't think I'd whack one of these POS alts...

Its stump hole likker Ace I keep telling u its not moonshine, moonshine is illegal to make partner!!!! Its medicinal Ace, u bust a knuckle changing a alternator u can pour some on the wound to sterilize it, be sure to drink about a cup full too in case some germs flew off the alternator into ur mouth and u swallowed them, sometimes it might take a cup and a half! LOL

Oh yea I forgot u can grab a shop broom and stick the end of the handle against the alternator and put ur ear to it and listen to the bad bearing makin a fuss before u can hear it with the naked ear!!!

Hey Jmiller it actually works, course usually by the time the brushes stick they r almost wore out but hey it buys u some time, remember this one when u r driving at nite a long ways from home in the middle of nowhere, a good whack on the alternator just might get u home!

Stump hole likker Ace dammit!, Bill keeps tellin' ya it ain't no damn moonshine! That moonshine will tear up your innards!

Thats rite 3500GMC and the good news is a friend of mine works at a drug manufacturing plant in Florence and he brought me two beautiful custom made thick wall copper worms for my medicine distilling device, I am gonna have a twin worm distillery device now so I can get more yield from a gallon of medicine producing mash! As I get older I have a need for more preventative stump hole likker to keep the germs at bay!!!!

When I have a job like that I prescribe 2-3 cups of medicine. You don't want to take a chance on them Alt germs. Anyone around me/helping usually needs to take some to (its just a good idea, can't be to carful these days).

Hueyrescue, Welcome!!

You can put a CS144 alt on your truck. It has a higher amp rating and is a slighty bigger alt, but is basicaly a bolt on. The CS144 has germs to though so be prepaired and have the medicine ready before hand.
