I've seen several pics on the board where people have used detroit alpine green on this 6.5's. Looks pretty darn good!

But, what about Detroit Blue:

Anyone use that yet?

I'm considering it on my 98 instead of the green. Then slipping something like this on to the valve covers:

Don't get me wrong, the green is nice, but the blue seems to be a more subdued/modern but different than black color...

Opinions?
Does any one know when Detroit diesel switched from the green to blue?

I believe the most modern detroit color is a silver.
I painted one black and won't do that again. The engine disappeared in the engine compartment. I'm very partial to the alpine green with a couple coats of clear on top of it.Painting the inner fenders something other than black really brightens up the engine bay.

The detroit blue can be had by Duplicolor. It's part number DE1683. I think i'll do one detroit blue and the other Detroit green. Not sure which to do which color yet however.

Leroy,

Can you tell me what that paint color is on the intakes? Navy grey? I very much like it for

Hey, not sure what its called, but it is very close to a Navy grey. All of the grey parts are powdercoated. They came out very very nice.

Barry, the Bracket you sent me....The one that you painted "black"...Is the cleanest spot on the entire engine, (Even with the accesories bolted on)........

It's so clean and shiney, I thought I had a "Leak" (Fuel or antifreeze) because it stood out from everything else around it.):h:eek::thumbsup::D:smile5:

I put several coats of clear over aluminum paint and it looks like this. The clear took the brightness out of the aluminum.

I've been keeping up with this thread. I love the looks of a clean, well painted motor and you guys have some sweet looking motors. As I was scrolling down I started wondering how the Chevy orange would look as that was what was so much the thing when I was in high school back in the 60s (shhh don't tell any body, old geezers like bling too). Then up came Mikey's pics. WOW! If I ever get the chance to make that color choice it will be the Chevy orange. But I'd take any clean, painted motor.

Some GREAT looking painted motors guys!! I like the idea of clear coat over the top. Drooool!!

Don

those are some beautiful engines!

You guys are making me want to paint mine when they are out...

I think what I will end up doing is paint the mechanically injected ones alpine green, and the electronic ones the series 60 blue, since of course alpine green was famous on mechanical two-cycles, and the blue was on the first electronic 4-cycle detroit. (note i said 4 cycle, cause IIRC, some late 2 cycle truck engines had electronics)

that is my thoughts on the dividing line of color choice...

Ah, that's the kernel of information I was looking for to help me decide.

Detroit blue it is.

I'm going to paint the whole thing. Like the old caterpillars, every piece was painted, the intake, the fuel lines etc.

Thanks GW. Why don't you just steal my idea and blab it to everybody! I've had that same pic of a Series60 in my screen saver for a couple years now. And I plan to put a decal of some type on the valve covers, just as you described.(maybe the hood decal as some have done) I wanted to be the guy to do it and post pictures first so I was keeping my mouth shut. I also like the alpine green, but the orange is like finger nails on a chalkboard! From time to time I see newer 350's painted orange (ones that originally came from GM painted black) and I instantly discredit any work that might have been done to them. I had a bad experience once..... I'm anal about that kind of stuff. A local engine builder(a good one too) paints all his newer chevy engines black. And that's fine except he uses gloss black. The General painted them semi-gloss. It annoys me to the point that if I help my mechanic friend put one in, I go buy the correct paint, with my money, and repaint it. See, anal. But I can't explain why alpine green and series60 blue are OK in my book, and chevy orange isn't. None of those colors are stock so they should all be a no-go. I guess I'm just like a woman because I don't even know why it's that way. It just is.
If someone gets their's painted blue before I do, please post pics of it. Or don't and pretend like I beat you to it when I post my pics!

To stay with the Detriot colors IIRC it was like this

2 strokes
N\A engines were "green" (like BK95TD's)
Turbo'd engines were Silver

"New" 4 strokes
were blue (like Great Whites pic)
