Did some searching and didn't come up with much here, so I what filters you guys running and why?

I'm looking to replace my K&N as I really don't want the oil system anymore, coats my entire entake....

What dry, cleanable elements are there that are high flow?

On this topic, anyone hear any news about Heaths CAI?

I was on his website and he offers the S&B, but it appears thats an oiled filter also.

aem has great dry filters they garantee them they run commericials during power block tv shows they show them twisting them up and knocking them around i would like to upgrade to one and ditch the k&n too less manintance

I switched to S&B for two cleaning intervals. It never gave me any more oily deposits than the stocker. You're over oiling, or CDR/blowby is the culprit.
I was unimpressed with the mileage and performance, and cleaning AND WAITING FOR IT TO DRY were a big PITA.

I reinstalled my stocker with a Fram filter in it, $8 IMO. They flow better and filter better IN REAL USE SITUATIONS.

Added advantage; Easy parts availability EVERYWHERE.
I used K&N way back when they first started up, ran in the Baja Mexico races; not too impressed with them either.

Delete blurb about Arlen's test

I have heard better things about AFE than K&N and most others. Donaldson makes good maybe the best element media not sure about pressure drop though. Seems Ford and Dodge put on much bigger cannisters in general. The bigger the better in my eyes on filter media and reduced restriction.

I posted something about Arlen Spicer's air filter study and you can find it on the place or google for it for results. I thought he showed power claims were bogus but I remembered incorrectly.

I don't know how much restriction changes performance? anyone? I know Kubota has a max vacuum in the intake plenum of thier NA engines before rejecting the application (tests the snorkel/filter on aftermarket installs). And I think Donaldson website gives pressure drop at flowrates or something like that for thier generic elements/housings. But they are when filter is new. ??? when dirty???

Sounds like you are over oiling the filter.
Cleaning instructions

Do you have a round filter or the flat plate?
The round filter with a K&N is hard to beat.

Instructions seem like its hard to over oil judging by how they do it.

I have the round one. I service it every few months, and only put on 15000 a year, so, I'm over-doing it, as they recommend every 50,000k :)

I'll just keep it.

I have Nanofiber dry air filter elements available for the 6.5, both the std and bigger HD airbox as well as replacements for many conical air filter elements from K&N etc. Turbine Doc is running one now and seems to be pleased.

These are cleaned with a shop vac and are guaranteed for 100k miles. Price is nice too.

PM me if you're interested.

Any Amsoil reps care to share their thoughts on their filters? It's the way I'm leaning ATM.

I'm not an Amsoil rep, but i do have the Amsoil Nanofiber round air filter in my pickup. I was told by my Amsoil rep that it's good for 100K with cleanings at 25K. I've had no issues with it and the truck seems to breathe perfectly fine.

The blazer will be getting one as well when i switch to amsoil in the next few weeks.

just my $0.02.

Over servicing a K&N is probably the worst thing you can do. I have run them in quite a few applications for over 25 years. They are great, I know many other people that run them as well. Unless you are in really dusty conditions, I recommend you install and forget it, then clean at 50,000 miles. There is no need to clean it sooner.

The test mentioned above has been around the internet for years. The guy that ran the test (a fireman and part time tree trimmer, IIRC) was invited to K&N to observe how they are tested. He bought a K&N from an auto parts store and watched as K&N ran it on their in house test lab equipment. Using SAE approved methods, they demonstrated to him that they do indeed filter properly. If you look, you can find his subsequent write up. Sorry, but I have read and looked into his initial test and I do not think he really knew what he was doing. I put my trust in test performed by real automotive experts such as David Vizard. He has done more dyno, flow bench and real world testing than most and knows a thing or two about engines. He is a long time advocate of K&N's.

I am using the Amsoil, they are good flow and good filter.

Cone on the burb, stock regular flat on the camry.

Both runs very well.

I went back and forth with this for a long time before I bought a filter to stuff in my 97+ box. I had the same feelings as you about the oiled filters and i still do. I couldnt find much of any info on aftermarket filters, and it seems as though not many vendors even list air filters for the 6.5.

I ended up just buying a factory ACdelco filter because I couldnt get enough of an answer from anyone. Had I been able to buy an amsoil or afe oil-less filter, I would have.

So for any vendors, could you list a part/filter number for available filters for the 97+ Thanks

BM, (BM?), Bobbie, This fireman test is the one that plagued me thinking my K&N was bad, probably making me clean it more often too.

I am glad you are backing this up, as I have also always used K&N's (First thing I'd buy for new vehicles) ... I got brainwashed that it was no good for the vast amounts of air the Turbo Diesel's require.

I feel alot more comfortable using it now, and I won't touch it Until my truck reaches 175k, or until my Air Cleaner service button triggers.

Thanks again.

My Suburban is nearly 15 years old and I've had it for 11 of those, almost as long as I've had my wife (18 years) and you know what, I'm still stuffing the box:thumbsup:

LOL

I have the SS Diesel cone filters in both the 6.5s and have been pleased. Not sure if there is any power adventage, but you do hear the turbo much better :)

I clean them every 10K. Overkill maybe, but I like them clean.

Huh, and here I am just using the stock flat box, with a STP filter, and the snorkel removed!
I can hear my turbo good enough, and I haven't heard the motor bich to me one time, nor as much as the wife would If I bought a K&N.
