Advice on Paint Prep

good source of paper is your local newspaper printer. Ask for "end rolls" and they will either give or sell cheap. The 'end rolls' don't have enough paper for a good run so they usually have a few yards on em.

Take your time in prep. If you decide to repaint later then you won't have to go all the way back and undo the short cuts.

YUP, I'm a printer and I used to use roll ends all the time painting cars. Works very well. Problem is getting ahold of a printer who will let you have them. They are sent out for recycling in my plant...unless ya work there of course.
 
Update: I used paint thinner and green 3M pads along with an ACE harware putty scraping tool to remove one side of bump strip sticky...tomorrow, the next side. I've redefined tedious. Still, on a long angle it looks smooth and clean. The sander should finish any remaining issues.
 
Yup, after those have been on there a while the sticky really dosen't want to come off. (If you don't care about the existing paint, laquer thinner is your friend) I've painted several cars/trucks in my home shop, good prep is the key - take your time and do it right the first time.

Hey, do I really need to get that z71 sticker off? It seems that, since I'm not putting a show quality paintjob on it, I could just rough it up with some sandpaper before painting. I'll take it to bare metal if I have to but I don't see the point in it.

Opinions?


I will say this. If you leave it there. It WILL show through the new paint.
 
So the stickers go, too! I'm clearly on the slippery slope and on a path closer to professional. Geez, last time I just washed the truck the day before. I was hoping I was done scraping but, yeah, I don't want to see the stickers under the paint after all the other prep work.

Peter from Parker (really!) Coatings (not Parker Paint) says dilute with 25-30% thinner.

I'm really looking forward to gunning it. Long ago, even when the paint was in good condition, I wanted to give it a flat camo pattern paint job in blues and grays similar to some T-38s. This should be better.

I took the Z71 stickers off today along with the Chevy Tailgate plaque.

Although the heatgun was worthless on the bump strip gum, it worked great on the Z71 decals. The photo closeup is prior to a thinner wipe down so there's still a bunch of goop there.

I'm going to Bondo the one substantial dent I have and call it quits and move on to sanding.

Also attached are photos of the project that's had me distracted. It's my ranch hydrant. I'll pump out of the pond to move water for putting out burn piles and pouring concrete slabs.
