Additives

You would think that. I was told by the owner of Houston bioD my statement above.

I have been using the FPPF Lubricity Plus Fuel Power. Half a bottle per tank seems to work well. I could use less bottle says it treats up to 250 gallons.

In the winter I always make sure Power Service from the white bottle gets poured in, and in the summer I try to keep a silver bottle in the toolbox for use. MN has 3% Bio mandatory in summer blend and possibly winter blend, and that does most of the lubrication. The PS is just for added insurance and Cetane.

I've always had very good luck running the white bottle of Power Service in the winter (16oz per tank) and the silver bottle in the summer time. For a long time I also ran the 16oz of 2 cycle oil (blue gallon jug at wal mart) along with the Power Service. Haven't ran it since last fall. Of course depending on how well I could keep my foot off the pedel, I saw as much as a 1mpg gain running both Power Service and 2 cycle.

The extra 2-stroke is most important for the older trucks, like the 6.2/6.5 with DB2/DS4 or old Powerstrokes with DB2 and older Cummins with mechanical injection. Which used pumps designed to be used with regular diesel where an additve was even recommended with LSD, let alone ULSD.

I imagine the PS alone is adequate for pumps designed to run on ULSD since early 2000s. Although a little more is likely welcome.

I don't disagree that more is better, but it's hard to do any of it when I don't fill our truck up half the time. They can barely remember to add from the white bottle in the winter...

I just recently bought a gallon of the Opti-Lube to run in my fuel mainly to aid in lubricity. It says you can run it in the engine oil as well. Does anyone here have experience with doing so? It touts a 10-12% increase in fuel economy too...

First off, I don't believe their claim that this oil additive can add 10-12% in fuel economy. 1-5% MAYBE...
Anyone that makes those kind of claims makes me not trust anything they are trying to sell.

If they gelled up a few times and were stuck in the freezing cold on the side of the road in the middle of winter, I bet they would remember it! ;)

X2. If I did my rough math right 1 gal of any additive would get you a 3% reduction in fuel use. Thats because you diluted the fuel by 3%
Or are they claiming if you got "X"MPG's before then after should be "X" + 3.2 MPG's at 10%

Thats a good point, when everyone calculates fuel mileage are additives in the calculation? I always just account that as part of the full tank, and dont subtract like a quart for 2-stroke, or sometimes I put in 2 quarts of ND-SAE30. thats a half gallon less fuel I put in, but I still count it as fuel.

I know there is some technical difference in the law and allows additives not to be taxed as a fuel. So, it would not supprize me if additive companies claim the reduced "fuel" use because you just diluted the "fuel" with an "additive"

I should start selling veg oil as an additive for $5 a qt and make those claims.
You could get as much as 100% fuel efficency because your not using fuel anymore, its all additive :D

Which fuel additive are you using that makes this claim?

My guess would be no. Straight up miles divided by gallons of fuel.

I only add 10 oz. per fill up so the effect would be minimal. I could see when you start adding quarts each fill up that it could make a difference in your calculations.

:stupid:

I was actually thinking about that yesterday, lol. I agree, if you add a few ounces at a time it's not a big deal, but 2 quarts a tank is a big difference, lol.

It's Opti-Lube XPD. I didn't buy it for the fuel savings, they actually don't advertise for fuel savings, it's sold because of the lubrication properties, suppose to be a slight cetane boost as well. Once the gallon got shipped to me there was a flier stuck in there that had a mention of fuel savings as well. I was just wondering if anyone else uses this stuff and puts it in their oil as well.

This stuff is actually highly praised. Apparently thedieselplace and some other vendors all chipped in and did an independent study on which additives improve the lubricity of ULSD best. Bio-diesel was first and this opti-lube was second. They did the study on about 15 different additives.
