So I have a bad ac leak on my 1995 suburban, I added a bottle of the 134a and could hear it hissing out behind the firewall where the evaporator canister line (i think thats what it is) goes behind the firewall. The AC has not worked since I bought it almost a year ago and I was wondering how big of a PITA it would be to fix it. Any one have suggestions on where to start what all to replace or how much it would cost I think it would be worth doing if I could do it for less than a few hundred dollars. My dad has a 94 chevy work truck that has what looks like the same AC that I could use for parts if I need to, his hasn't worked for a long time either but he said his leaked somewhere in the engine bay. Sure would be nice to have since I use the suburban to tow a boat, long trips in the hot summer days. Thanks for reading any advice is appreciated. -Jesse

Sounds like either the evaporator or the oring connecting it. Big T did a huge write up on changing his after he mauled the fittings/pipe. Not for those with weak stomachs. If you are really lucky it's just an oring from the dryer to the evaporator and it will actually come apart nice...If you are very lucky.

That part is accumulator/dryer and have to be replaced with NEW one when the AC system is opened.

IMO, it is not worth your time and money to fix AC system with used parts other than may be some pipes.

It is more like the tools to do it and the know how.

I suggest you get an AC shop to verify the leak location before you throw a bunch of parts at it. Otherwise Just replace everything, yes, EVERYTHING! AC hoses, compressor, accumulator, condenser, orface tube, and related o rings. You will eventually replace the leaking part and maybe with luck not introduce new leaks on the old AC parts.

Big T went through this and here is another member's write up:

The Dryer doesn't have to be replaced "just because the system was opened". It only "needs" to be replaced if the system was open for an extended period of time or if the compressor went south(In which case should be flushed as well.) Sometimes the dryer can be right stubborn and I have left them alone. Is it Ideal to replace it ..yes but when someone doesn't have the time or money to rip the entire ac box out to change the evap too cause the dryer is seized to it...well then leave it be. It'll work. Trust me. I doubt there are any kits. A sniffer can find the leak but if it's leaking that badly you could even use soapy water or something. Usually the dust will stick to it if it's bad enough. Dye works but I always leave that as a last resort and sparingly. I think once in the last 10 yrs I had to resort to dye.
