So, I let the g/f use my truck today to get to work and she got a stone chip in the windshield. When I got home from her house I noticed a nice crack across the whole bottom of the windshield by the defrost. Man that burns me. :mad5: I know it could happen to anybody but I haven't replaced a windshield in the 3 trucks I have owned. I never follow gravel or salt trucks and have never had a problem. I hate letting people borrow my truck after stuff like this happens.

How much are windshields and should I stick with a GM one or are they all the same quality?

You can file it as an insurance claim, and only your deductible will apply.

Prices (if you want to take care of it yourself) will vary depending on location. I do not know if quaity variances exist between manufacturers, though.

yes there is a diff in quality.some cheaper glass is like looking threw a beer bottle.you dont need to go with oem but dont get the cheapest thing you can find.i think oem is ppg glass but im not for sure.you might check with some of your local junk yards.

My wife hit a turkey and took out the windshield in her van, I searched around for price and talked with each vendor, I ended up with a middle of the road price. I chose the vendor because they showed me there operation and the fact that they ordered there glass from the same place that the dealers do only they don't mark them up as much as the dealer. They also said that "Most" glass plases get there stock from the same place as OEM dealers. I also liked the fact that they came to my house and installed the windshield while I was on vacation and I paid them when I got back. No regrets!

I have replaced them in a 87 and my 94 Chevys, around 200 bucks here a year or so ago...

I replaced two in my Ford, within a week of eachother and my insurance paid everything. It didnt cost me a dime. I dont think a deductible always applies but obviously it depends on the company.

Yeah, I did have to replace my rear slider window after I tried to break in on my old truck (locked my keys inside). I had done it a few times...guess it got sick of it cause the slider shattered. :rolleyes5: I think my deductible was $250 then.

Depends on how much the glass is I guess. I don't want to file a claim but if it saves me $100 or so then I will. There is a guy across the street from work that does windshields in his barn. $150 installed most vehicles. We had one replaced on our Colorado shop truck....got a stone chip and cracked within the first year. I don't know...it probably could have happened to a GM one too. I might give him a shot.

At least it was your woman that did it. You can get some mileage out of that one...

Yep. You probably don't want advice from us old guys, but...

Smile. Buy a new one. Tell her it's just a windshield. If you ride her about it, or make a big deal, you can bet she'll hang onto that...

... and make you pay for it, someday.

Yeah I know, I told her it could happen to anyone and not to worry about it. It was just kind of a bad night and that put a nice end to it.

Wow, we have to change ours atleast once a year.. Try living in an area surrounded by gravel pits and dump trucks.

I don't replace a windshield until it obstructs the drivers view. Otherwise I'd be replacing at least one a year with my 3 vehicles. It's not following a truck too close that is the problem for me, it's the 2 lane highway with a tractor/trailer going the opposite direction in the winter. They kick all the gravel up in the air and you drive right through it.

My truck has one all the way across the bottom, but it's where you look at the hood so I really don't care that it's there. The car has several chips, but no cracks yet (replaced it last year). Jeep also has several chips, but the main problem with it is the "sandblasted" appearance when you're driving into the sunset.

I've got a $300 deductible for windshields. I never put in a claim because the cost has never been more than that. Usually around $200-$250

Mine got a chip this summer and I kept telling myself that I needed to replace it before winter. I never did, and sure enough one day I cranked the heat on and watched it crawl right across.

If you catch it in time you can bring it to a windshield place...they will keep that crack from happening. I won't replace mine yet....it's not in my view either but it will crack upwards some day.

I have yet to have a chip or crack successfully repaired. I stopped trying a couple years ago. Before then I was pretty religious about getting them fixed asap, but every single one eventually continued to crack from the repair point.

Waste of money IMHO
