Was out in a snow storm at the store while in the parking lot with 6" of snow on the ground its in 4hi making a turn when it started sliding into a large snow mound I tried turning hard and hitting the brakes at the same time then let off gave it gas to avoid the mound when the steering went hard and could barley turn around the mound then noticed the brakes were really hard as well almost had to stand on the pedal to get any type of braking. Got out check fluid levels in the ps pump and master cylinder a both a little low, then looked around for leaks at all the ps lines and all looked ok.Barley made it home and I topped off both with fluid and took it back out around the block and nothing changed. While going around a turn to head back to my house the steering was so hard could barley make it and almost took out a mail box and snow mound brakes also barley worked even with standing on the pedal.

I think personally that the ps pump some how went bad from the hard turning and braking at the same time. I have a question if the hydroboost goes bad but the ps pump is good will I still have power steering or because the hydroboost went bad the fluid that goes through it will also effect the power steering?

I need to fix this asap but cant afford to be spending money on unneeded parts cause I not working right now and funds are really low.

I need this truck to get my wife back and forth to work (ER nurse) with all the snow we have been having. Please anyone that knows what it might be or had similar experience let me know,.....Thanks, Anthony

Remove teh cap from the power steering reservoir and start the truck. If you see fluid being returned(the fluid is obviously circulating in the reservoir), then you have a hydroboost problem most likely. If you don't see much fluid moving inside then your pump is probably gone. it is possible teh hydroboost could go out and return all the fluid back to the pumps reservoir and leave you without steering or brakes because of it.

I'm with Ferm on the power steering pump. Mine was leaking when I bought it. When I replaced it, I had to work out a bubble in the system before my steering and brakes came back. It felt exactly how you're describing it. That'd be the next place I'd check.

anyone else have any input before I satrt spending money that I dont have on a part that might not be the answer? Logic would say that the pump provides pressure to the whole system but my question is even if the booster went bad without any leaks to it shoulnd the steering still work because the pump is still providing pressure do the line to the steering box? Please anyone else chime in that had any type of experience or knowledge of this system. Also found the rpo code for the booster/brakes its:JD7 if that helps

take the pulley on the PS pump and pull it out and push it in. I've had a couple break the shaft, didn't leak just didn't pump any fluid.

If the shaft is broke wouldnt it walkout due to the engine spinning the pulley?

Weather here has been brutal is been snowing the last three days now with it being really wind as well I am waiting for a better day to mess with it and tomorrow might be good if the snow and wind stops.

So you are saying that the shaft was broken and it stayed in the pump with the engine spinning the pulley. I would think it would walk right out the front.I will try tomorrow and let you know.

Look for fluid returning to the reservoir first, if there is then the pump is probably good. The pressure goes from the pump to the hydro booster, and then the steering. If the hydro boost fails and bleeds all the pressure back to the pump the steering will get no pressure. And the power steering pump shaft could have sheered off right in front of where the rotor head is atatched. This would allow the shaft to still be supported, but not turn the vanes.

well got to look at it today ,first time since it happened and it was wet all around the lines near the pump but the pump was still full of fluid. couldnt find my serp tool to take the belt off to try and spin the pulley but now Im thinking its def the pump. I also could see a electrical connector on it so I asume its got the evo pump. I see that Cardone makes a pump with a by pass pipe but dosent look like it has the actuator just the pipe so is that something else I would have to buy to make that model pump work? heres the link:http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/we...9-p?navigationPath=L1*14921|L2*15009|L3*15715
