I'm pretty sure now, i've damaged the ring gear. The starter cranks a bit and then grinds and spins. Local transmission shop says $1000 for that including a flush and fill but that would then put me back to where I was. If I need another injector pump on top of that, i'm probably in over my head. Any suggestions on how to test the injector pump without starting the vehicle. I did the thing where you put the car in drive and turn the key. I could hear the pump on the rail going and if I opened the bleeder valve on the fuel filter, fuel bled but I didn't hear anything out of the injector pump. I also did this while a fuel line was open but got nothing out of the line.
I luv to watch people work at what they are good at and u sooty handed diesel luvin Truck Stop mechanics are bad to the bone!!!! LOL At this time can I please say grounds, grounds, grounds all I know as a newbie is check them grounds.....ummm by the way do yall know about the woodchuck chuckin wood???? Hang in there Donwally the sooty handed people luv a challenge and I can tell they r gettin into the meat now and u r right there with them!!!! I see ur future Donwally as a true GM diesel man!!! :hihi::thumbsup::bow: All hale the diesel Wizards!!!!
Uh Oh.....donwally u wont get fuel out of a injector line without the engine running. They want u to open the line between the fuel filter manager FFM and the IP to check to c if fuel comes out, u do this by doing the thing where u hear the LP running. Hope thats a nhelp.
You won't see fuel coming out of the injector lines, i believe the lines fill when they are sealed and pressurizes against the injector nozzle and then sprays. Even while running you won't see much come out of a cracked injector line. I had a loose line when i first got the truck running after 5 years and after a month of driving i had dripped enough to slightly stain the block like somebody spilled juice on it LOL So don't expect fuel to spray oout because it won't, in my experience.
Even though the engine may be spinning, these engines need a lot of power and RPM to build heat to fire. Which is made only worse by bad glowplugs or low compression. That's my advice
Just go look at the starter, see if the nose cone cracked, apparantly common, mine exploded a few months ago. Put chunks all over the inspection cover. New starter was about $300 from Autolite. Took me about 2 hours to get it in. It still engaged a little and spun with a terrible chunky crunchy noise.
You can check the resistance through the IP's fuel solenoid windings, which should be about 0.5 ohms. You can also test the output of the PMD. Its detailed in the file I posted, near the end.
$1000 is way to much if thats whats needed. I would say $300 would be OK if you supply the parts. I had a guy do my rear main seal for $250, basicaly the same labor as a flex plate R&R. Check you starter first as buddy said.
Chances are good that you are getting fuel to the IP, but you do want to confirm it. Just remove the inlet hose on IP and engauge the LP like you did before. There is one more screen under the IP inlet fitting you can check if you get good fuel in previous step.
You won't have fuel to the injectors until its running.
Orrum did hit on something, you need to check the grounds and the rear of pass side intake. Make sure they are clean and in good shape. If bad, they can cause the engine to be DEAD just like you turned off a switch.
OMG!!!!!!!! Its the GROUNDS again,,,,,,,I dont believe it, finally we get to something that I am qualified for. Hang in there Donwally its not hard to do anything with these people helping and u cant be as confused as me, they use to try to use pics to help me understand but finally Great White and Buddy had to resort to hand drawn pics on notebook paper!!!! True story, but hey we got er done Donwally!!!!
I haven't posted in about a month because I damaged the flex plate in the truck and wasn't able to continue with my diagnostics. At this point the flex plate is fixed and I am back to trying to get the truck to start. Both batteries are new and are cranking hard. If you loosen the fuel inlet hose on top of the injector pump, fuel does come out when cranking but an open fuel line on the side of the engine gives no fuel when cranking. Am I down to the PMD or the injector pump as my last two possible problems?
What grounds am I looking for? I'm not a mechanic. Somewhat handy, but not really technically trained. Prior to the truck not starting, it was having trouble starting. Getting worse by the day. A mechanic friend felt that my fuel is bad and said it smelled of tupentine. Even with that though, there is no smoking on starting, and no fuel coming from the fuel line. I'll be happy to check the grounds, but some direction as to where to locate them would be a help. Thanks in advance for any and all advice.
