94 C2500 SAS

Ok, I just sold a bunch of hay and am gonna buy something to replace my Dmax that is soon to go for sale.

Looking VERY hard at a 94 C2500 454. My only issue is the 2wd part. I have 2 spare 4x4 4l80's and atleast one working tcase (ds drop 241).

I have access to a 79ford Hp 44 8 lug, 80's ford 60, and front and rear 05 dodge axles.

Now I need to figure out what to use. Everyone does leafs and 6" or more lift. I was thinking the Dodge axles w/ coils (or bags) and maybe 4" lift. I don't need a lot of flex, stock dodge or ford axle movement is fine.

So the question, does any one know if the stock 2wd coil buckets get anywhere close to the Dodge front axle buckets?

Could someone measure their 2wd?

If anyone has a 4x4 dodge handy could you please get a measurement? (les/AK if you are still near you brother?)

Take a flight or drive a 6.5 to AZ with pickup hauler trailer. Pickup a 4x4 454 for $1000.00 +-. Drag truck back. Paint it with rattle can and replace sun baked interior.

I'd do a military truck but I cant drive across 3 states to track down a truck, been there, done that. My wife would kill me.

There are a couple ragged out 454 4x4 trucks local but this one is too clean to pass up.
 
Honestly I am not wanting another 6.2/6.5L at the moment. I have enough of those to fix as it is. lol

I can get a 454 cheap, run on pane, and E85. High diesel prices and the cost to mod a 6.5L dont sit well for my pocket book VS a nice looking 454.
 
looks like 41" center to center and a coil diameter of 7 1/2". I'll be gone thursday by a little after noon so if you want any other dimensions let me know. How are you going to handle the 4 link aspect?
 
Any gasser I get has to be 87-95 TBI. 87-92 454's had TH400's IIRC, thats not really an issue since I have 2 4x4 4l80's and I'm sure they can be wired in OEM style or w/ standalone.

I'm really not picky as far as 350 or 454. 454 would be a stock contender w/ a 6.5L and I have always wondered how a 454 would stand up to a 6.5L on similar budget.

If I can find a TBI 350 NV4500 4x4 then that would be great since I have a Vortec 350 long block in my shop that can be overhauled to a 383 for work duty. (the 92 5 speed truck in GM Guys auction thread caught my interest)

IF they are close enough that I can move the dodge buckets to work I was thinking of using the dodge control arm for a template of dimensions. If the other truck manufacturers can hang big mounts behind their axles then I'm not sure why I couldnt do it on a chevy.

The SAS wont happen immediately but maybe next winter. I just want to know what parts I need to start collecting if I go this route.

If I can get a hold the guy w/ the big feed wagon I might go that way.

Pretty nice M1008 to be parting out. Wonder if the seller has issues with a title?

He is asking top dollar for the drivetrain, but $800 for a 15K 6.2 is reasonable...
 
My $.02: In fleets, one of the big selling features GM has over the competition is the steering / suspension system. How many miles on your 4x4 Chev before ball joints, tie rod ends bushings etc. Ford is nearly double due to parts cost. Dodge? Nightmares. Ask Les why he is down here, and his brothers truck already had repairs and upgrades once before and did not look to be abused at all.

Trading engine upgrade time and money for steering / suspension time and money is confusing to me. I am definitely not the front end expert, I hate that type of work and avoid it. My experience is from managed fleets, one fleet with over 150 4x4s in it. Kinda choose you poison I suppose. I think Diesel Cash and War Wagon have the right idea- find what you need. Even a city boy knows city trucks how hard farm trucks work. Unless it is an amazing deal I would travel a bit for a garaged truck to buy.
 
That is my point on the 94 C2500 454 it is everything I need but 2wd. I hear all the time how ford kingpin axles are built for abuse and don't wear out fast. I don't mind front end work, I do 2-5/yr but I only do GM trucks.

I hear you on a dodge axle though, I used to work in a dodge performance shop and rebuilt a few axles.

I have talked to the guy w/ the k3500 454 w/ bale bed. He bought it from the original owner w/ the original bed. It needs new dually fenders but he would sell the bed too. I don't really need the oem bed. I only have one truck w/ original bed. He said the trans needs synchros, that's not a fun job imo. He said he was shown a receipt for new gm crate engine at 160k but doesn't have the receipt himself, so who knows. He said he only put bout 10k on the truck over 2yrs feeding 30 head of cattle so it wasn't a life time of abuse.

I can get the c2500 and a bed for 3k total, I have the front axle already and also the 4x4 trans and tcase to make the swap. All I need is mounts, leafs, steering crossover, and a driveshaft in theory.

The Ford kingpins system is good, far better than the Dodge. But they eat tierod ends, pitman and idler arms from my understanding.

Straight axle kits are good for articulation and suspension lifts, not so nice on road, but on the farm work truck it could work nicely. That could be a good option since you have most the parts and just get a good deal on the truck. Set aside some extra $ for fine tuning.
 
Kinda my thoughts, I don't have to do it all at once either.

My trans and tcase are both new gm goodwrench w/ only 10k on them and I have all the paperwork. It's in our neighbors 96 k2500 feed truck I bought for parts.
