93 GM3 turbo wastegate stuck

My opinion my be considered to be biased since I helped with the R&D behind this, that said I have no financial interest in the ATT as was alleged at a site I used to frequent.

I have towed with IC, & without IC currently running without if you have some time a LOT of information posted here is Al's install http://www.thetruckstop.us/forum/showthread.php?t=7815 and a couple of posts from some others http://www.thetruckstop.us/forum/showthread.php?t=11593 on the subject IIRC there are maybe 40 ATTs operating with success out there, some with IC and some with WMI, and currently I'm running neither IC or WMI

I have some data to go with my installs as well for prototype and ATT http://www.thetruckstop.us/forum/showthread.php?t=2015 be prepared on that one it's probably the most viewed post on the web in the 6.5 world.

YEs Slim Shady has answered all my questions, now Id like some input from people who have them!! The running hot underboost issue im not sure what it is...radiator is as clean as I can get it, full of coolant, so leaning towards turbo makes engine work to hard(to much back pressure as wastegate is stuck almost all the way closed but is open slightly) or I need a new thermostat.....

Can't be too hard to find in search, there are dozens of happy customers who ALL report the same things.

10% better fuel mileage and increased pulling and feels like more engine reserve where you were previously done for. I'll be tossing one on soon.... not soon enough :).

Its a no brainer for a working DD rig. Easiest (only?) kit available too. Price is fantastic.

Also you are replacing the turbo, so your 200k mile turbo wont fail on you.

If WG is open at all, then you are running the crap out the engine to compensate for lost boost, WG's on the 6.5 are meant to be closed until you are nearing what the PCM considers to be high boost per it's algorithm, add into that; once you start getting above 10 psi boost IAT climbs almost in a straight lime up so you are adding in 200 F + charge air to engine load, were you EFI IP'd I suspect you would be defueling from high IAT.

To correct your problem, get a fully functional GM turbo, add in post turbo cooling if you are needing 10+ boost to pull your loads, or get the ATT which does a better job of making boost overall (in my biased opinion :D), especially when running at highway towing speeds. ATT benefits from IC/WMI but since it spends less time in hard boost WMI may be better choice as you aren't into constant spray like the GM turbo requires when towing heavy.

I removed my IC from my ATT setup as it gave a minor emphasis MINOR performance loss going thru the IC, it's fine to use a IC, but I just prefer the WMI since mine is more daily driver than tow rig these days, and I like the little bit of zippiness without the IC in the airflow path.

:friday: Glad to see Turbine Doc enjoying the holiday weekend.

:pokey: The posts above is a good one and perhaps TD is going to write the DS4 conversion guide.

Seriously the post is what the more modern electronic control 6.5 do to protect the engine. The problem is the same just goes on unchecked on the DB2 mechanical like we got with the 1993 and older 6.5's. The ones that have the ability to totally melt down the engine without a computer getting in our way or PMD randomly failing to make us walk. (We got plenty of other possible walking issues with the age of our trucks as it is.)

As said there are several other turbo's for the 6.5 the ATT being a bolt on kit and posts of it doing what is promised to back it up. You just have to get over the cost of a new turbo vs. used.

I DONT have to run IC or WMI right?? I think that I wont need any of that as I dont use this truck often to tow with and I drive by the gauges, let off when she starts heating up and such....Im prolly gonna fix this up and just hang onto the truck as a backup for awhile and then sell it....

Correct. Don't need it, and you probably wont have to back off the truck at all if your cooling system is in check. The only reason I said probably is just incase you have a 25,000 # trailer you plan to tow :)

Warning: You may end up liking the truck so much you wont want to sell it.

But as mentioned above, in order to take advantage of a true good flowing turbo such as the ATT or any other upgrade from the GM Turbo, or the GM Turbo itself for that matter, a free flowing exhaust behind the turbo is REQUIRED.

I've had the ATT for 2 1/2 yrs and love it. I've pulled a combined weight of 28000 lbs up a 4% grade at 55 mph at 1050 egt. With my intake boxed off I'm sure it would be lower.

Do you have a before ATT MPH on the hill? I know it wasn't 55 MPH but just curious how much lower...

Ok, im convinced im gonna buy the ATT after I save the money up again...hehe I just spent all mine on gauges and chip from Dog House Diesel....Cant have a cummins and NOT play with it....Ill NEVER pull 28,000lbs!!! my trailer will be 10,000 or less MAX and then what ever the truck is....

No I don't, I just went to pick up some used 3" drill stem that one time.

I should add that I had lots of power but kept it there because of egt's.

I've had it 1 1/2 yrs, not 2 1/2 yrs.

Now that says it all. Not enough power with a GM3 maxed out at 14 PSI and EGT's so high Heath Diesel says were impossible and where did the glow plugs go? 17K gross weight

Only up to a 7% grade...

I don't know the grade, but yesterday I just climbed the summit of I-90 on the Mass Pike 1729 feet @ 75-80 & my ole 6.5 never missed a beat, pushed the APP to floor a couple of times no hesitation at all rite up to 95 when I decided enough was enough, more to be had from the engine but with traffic it wasn't wise to stay there.
