93 6.5 unknown injectors

No turbo boost it should be smoking some black! Turned up pump the fender should be black with no boost.

I get some black, but not enough to suit me... think it should roll black....Ive seen some videos on utube and they reallly roll the coal...Im wondering now if I have a fuel delivery problem...Im gonna grab a pressure gauge this week(got tractor show stuff all this weekend so cant work on it)....It runs fine has plenty of power(its a 6.5 not a 5.9 so I dont ask for much)....My fender wont get black no matter how hard i try!! hehe I got twin 4in stacks!!!! Like today I hauled a nice shiny white garden tractor in the bed of my truck, and with my stacks you'd think I can turn it black, I drove little over 40 miles and all I got was a hand full of black speckals all over it(and i think them was from when I passed a guy and ran it up to 70mph and about 3000rpms)....BUT im gonna try all your suggestions about the pressure and filter check, if that dont work, then Im just gonna have to be happy with it.... I know its a 6.5 and NOT my 5.9 commom rail.....

Believe me, a 6.5 can lay a black smokescreen along the highway if you wanted it to, I think I killed a few bicyclers once with smoke inhalation.

I was thinking today, between my truck i think having 6.2 injectors and my stacks(they are a 4in square tube with stacks mounted to it) i wonder if they kill alot of the smoke...Im wondering if the tube holds some of it in, and then the injectors just cant spray as much fuel as a regular 6.5.... Hehe Great White I need ur truck!!! im trying to make the smoke and ur trying to kill it....just do what ever is done to my truck!! it will be gone(for the most part)....

Word here...

My goal was not black coal. I wanted the most power I could get for towing. One 6.5 engine scuffed a piston due to a bad fan clutch and radiator cap. It burned a hole through the resulting crack after 7000 miles. This was 1/3 turn high on IP. No smoke to speak of at 14 PSI top sustained full load boost.

The Boost on the 6.2 replacement was slow due to both a exhaust manifold leak and other issues. It only had 1/2 turn high, 1/4 recommended. 14 PSI boost and still smoked. The glow plugs look like they rusted from the texture and they are nearly spotless silver with no carbon build up. I wanted to stop the smoke as EGT's were in the un-possible range, no not just too high, but, Bill Heath's outfit said you can't do that 'temp' with a DB2.

So you have a fuel problem or a bad boost gauge.

Thus, roll the coal from a 6.5/6.2 is not a good idea. It is best done with the turbo removed. A 5.7 Olds diesel does even better for factory smoke. No where near the fog bank common rail can give you. Although the 5.7 did a damn good job of fogging people on hills in our Delta 88.

The 6.2 military surplus engines are cheap but rolling coal is a quick path to Need one.

I pulled a trailer yesterday with it(about 7000lbs of stuff on it)...Ive got the waste gate OPEN i know this because ive took the back half off and its open!! Now, my EGT's were right around 600 degrees towing about 55 with the cruise on...If I came from a dead stop and romped on it hard, she'd roll a decent fog but nothing like a cummins(im satisfied to say it CANT do it)....My EGT's then would run to 1200degrees if pushed hard...AND if pushed all the way to the floor at about 3000rpms i could get 4psi boost!!!!! AND THE WASTE GATE IS OPEN!!!! My EGT's NEVER went over 1200degrees and the block temp NEVER went over about 195!! Im satisfied to say this thing WONT smoke like Iwant but Ive now got my over heating problem solved(it was a bad thermostat and my turbo overboosting)....Im just gonna save up and buy an ATT turbo to replace the bad GM3(waste gate is stuck).....then i should have all my power back and it should be a good truck!!! MAN im glad all you smarter than people are on here!!! Solved all my problems so far!!!! MANY THANKS!!!!!!!

I dont know hot a turbo wastegate on these sticks open, they just operate on a lever, and they swing with a 1:1 ratio of displacement. If its stuck its just because the actuator on the outside itself is stuck. And if you had no boost the truck would be incredibly slow and weak and you would have tons of black smoke.

Buddy I've seen some where the WG flapper shaft has frozen itself to the bushing in the turbo body sticking them open. The ones I've seen had WGs that were "flapping in the breeze" no vac on them for a long time, putting a step wear in the shaft, then the shaft sort of galls up in the out of round shaft/bushing & gets stuck some open a little and some a lot.

STF were I U I would not tow with that WG partially open, it ain't healthy, you might want to consider taking turbo apart liberally soak it PB blaster and with a brass drift see if you can tap the WG flapper as far closed as you can get it to shut, and then wire it closed.

Its almost welded stuck...I worked and got it opened up(it was boosting like a mother F*&@#&$)....When boost would climb above 10psi my EGT's would run WAY past 1200degress....I spiked them up to 1400degrees and it was climbing quick(rpms were at like 2600ish)....Once I opened it up my EGT's stay consistent now..It was stuck before almost shut and it ran like a raped ape but got VERY VERY hot...replaced thermostat and opened waste gate and problem solved!! I think an ATT will fix ALL my problems!!Sorry buddy, havent gotten to checking that yet.... I will check it when I can!!! Im going with I will NEVER get this thing to smoke, and I will burn it up if I do...So ill just fix the turbo(with an ATT) and then live with it...I got an 03 COmmon Rail cummins to do my hard work with...Id love to see how much smoke u can get buddy!!Thanks!!!
