92 7.3 glow plug question

Have a friend with a 92 non turbo 7.3 with glow plug troubles. I haven't seen the truck so I am going on what he told me. Changed the glow plugs they will work one time and be burnt up. So it must need a controller right? Where are those located and what do the run? Easier/cheaper to run them to a silinod and switch?

i would tend to agree with your thoughts, sounds like a super screwy controller.

also, is it getting replaced as a full set?

Id recommend going to rock auto and get a controller and a fresh set of plugs and changing everything

Also make sure it still has the resistor installed at the controller. Alot of people take them off not knowing what they do and then burn up glow plugs immediately. The glow plugs in the NAVISTAR IDI's are 6 volts, not 12 volts. That is why they all had that big zig zag metal resistor on the top of the controller was to drop the voltage back. Also if a glow plug or 2 is bad this will increase the voltage to the other plugs and cause them to burn out rapidly. And be certain to use ONLY BERU glow plugs. They are available at AUTOZONE under the MOTORCRAFT brand, the others will swell and break off in the pre-chamber.
