88gmctruck's 1999 K2500 L65 cranks but doesn't start.

Alright!

Ended up running south to Lewiston, found a junkyard there. Grabbed another module. First two trucks we looked at were 1/2tons and had a different part number. The only later model truck was a 1-ton and it had the right module.

So, we get back home, and plug the module in. First thing i notice, the security light is now flashing, not steady. So, 30 minute passlock relearn ensues. After it's all said and done, go to crank the truck (mind you the security light is now off). It cranked and cranked and cranked.......... At this point I'm about to start throwing things. Take a quick look under the hood and low and behold, the PMD is still unplugged from when I tested the plug. Plug it in, crank and bam; truck clankity clanks to life.

Excited I am. So, trucks working, and all due to the damned passlock module.

Also, I decided to pilfer a few other parts while I was there. This yard had a nice selection of GMT400 trucks, surprisingly with quite a few parts in them.

All that plus the devillock, uh, I mean passlock module for $97. I can't complain.

Thanks again for all the help guys, I'm glad I was able to track this problem down and solve it rather quickly.

I don't think the PMD had anything to do with it, i re-installed the old PMD and it's working just fine. I am very glad to have the truck back working, hopefully friday I'll get some of the other things done for it after class.

Hey David:

The reprogrammed PCM is gonna have to wait for a while.

We pranged and aircraft in last night and I'm kinda.........."busted up".

Gonna be a while before I can even get out of the house....sorry bro.

Glad you got the beast running again though.

Cheers

Thanks BJ, no worries. Hopefully I won't have that problem again.

Just so everyone knows, I took the truck on a trip this weekend, 300 mile drive with no problems aside from needing new wiper blades and crappy GMT400 composite headlights. :D

Don't know what that means but hope you're not hurt too bad.

Setting here, read this thread over, and wow. This is one amazing 6.5 community. Second to none.

Glad you have your rig back, David.

I totally agree. I don't think there exists another forum that would honestly be this helpful, and responsive and willing to help as this place. It's great.

Great white,

Is flashing something the "common" guy can do? I have a suburban that I just ordered a new pcm for. I am very interested in turning off the passlock even if my truck does start just fine after a relearn. Fingers crossed. My light was on steady and it doesn't take the relearn. I ordered a bypass from newrockies but it's not a full bypass. I still requires the pcm to be working. I am sending that back. They are giving me a refund also. I ordered a new PCM off of amazon for $100.

So my question is if I there is a web site that explains how to flash these things.

THANK YOU!

Hmmm, here's a thought:

I flash my spare PCM this weekend. If it works in my truck, you pay for shipping to you.

Plug it in, if it works, you keep it and send me yours to replace mine.

If it doesn't work in yours though, I'd want it shipped back.....

Like I said before, I'll just throw the offer out there.

Try your other options first. If it turns out to be a bad connector or something, you're golden. Then you can look at picking up another PCM and doing the passlock delete whenever you want.

Cheers

I bought a PCM from a 99........It won't start my truck, service tag# is the same, do you think it's the pass-lock in the 99 programming?

She'll turn over for (literally) 1/2 a second and shut right down......Paid $75 for it.

won't start

Did you do the relearn? I put a new unit in and had to do the relearn 4 times to get it to start. Problem is the security light stays on solid so I don't think this will continue to work. I am wondering if anyone knows if these can be reprogrammed either by the owner or the dealer.

Well I'm assuming you have a 97+ year truck, (as you have not filled out your signature)......In my case I have a 96, which was NOT equipped with any security pass-lock, so a "relearn" would not apply in my situation (I Think)

I would think that the Pass-Lock programing in the PCM would have to be disabled......That said, anyone that "reprograms or flash's" should be able to do it with the correct software and the know how to use it. That might "exclude" the Dealer....

Louis, the 98+ PCM will have passlock and it needs the input from the passlock module to enable fuel to the motor. Basically the motor give a little hickup like it's going to start, but never does. It will crank endlessly though.

I know BJ has a non-passlocked PCM he did himself, you might shoot him a PM but I do know he's probably busy with his own move and such. If worse comes to worse, I'd be willing to take the PCM off your hands.

David, do you know what the service tag # is off of BJ's disabled Pass-Lock PCM?.........I'd be willing to swap, if not I'd look for other options.....(ie.) there is a auto elec guy down here who said he "could" flash the PCM to my vin (Don't know if that would disable the pass-lock, need more info, but BJ did it, so maybe).....Dealer....Bill, etc.

I'm dealing with many problems right now.....Ghost, possible crack or HG failure and the list goes on.....

IIRC BJ got the PCM flash from Wester's originally. I'd speak with him.

His PCM should be the same service tag for a 99. I don't recall if they differ based on AT or MT.

Sounds like passlock. If the 99 had it and your 96 doesn't, it's not going to work.

Yup, the software/hardware is not cheap though. Only ways I currently know of is with a tech II (dealer) or tunercatII (not for sale anymore). I have tunercat II, but I spent almost a grand to get it.

Dealer can do it, so can I and I know you can get one from bill heath that way (I've got one on the way in the mail, he turned it off for me). I would assume Kojo could do the same....

The service number is the same as every other OBDII PCM I've seen/flashed; 16216588

Its the calibration files that hold the vin/passlock info. Turn it off, the PCM never goes out to check for the passlock input.

The calibration file for my vin calls up for passlock info, but I turned it off in my re-flashing software.

If your truck doesn't have passlock, then if your guy flashes your vin into the new pcm it will accomplish the same thing as turning off the passlock in the calibration.

Flashing your vin into the PCM is a different thing from what I am doing though. I can modify the calibration files and still keep the proper vin in my PCM....
