Clear return and supply line test. Watching for bubbles and fuel flow.

And starting better warm/ hot is sign of weak glowplug / compression side of things- not worn out ip.

Pull plugs and bench test. Do compression check & leak down test while out.
Rent/borrow compression tester for diesel from Orrielys auto parts store. I think they have diesel capable compression testers.

Toying with the idea of making this a daily driver. One thing that always been annoying is the the belts. What year is the best set up to swap the a serpentine belt set up? A/C has been dead but I will get that working again for sure.

96+ with the compressor on the driver side of the engine just like yours is now. I forget if the t stat housing needs to be changed and if you need the rare 1996 with a DB2 and cruise control. A detail you need to triple check before buying parts.

The 88-95 serp belt drive have the POS R4 compressor and no kits for something better: It also puts the A/C compressor load on everything in the belt drive. I know for sure 88-95 works with a DB2. Or was it 92-95 NBS diesel availability? Our 1988 OBS 6.2 still had V Belts.

Also when you go to the serpentine belt it reverses the direction of the waterpump- this is where the whole - balanced flow water pump & system comes into play.
There are people who get long life out of the serpentine belt, some with short lives- basically the same as V belts. Good and bad with both.

Personally I always liked the v belts- I really like it because you can easily swap to the hmmwv fan clutch and have control of when the fan is engaged or disengaged.
Not as crucial with square body as the gmt400 or hummer use.
