6.5T Newbie looks for wisdom.

So I finally got my new PMD and installed it last night. I will now go through my fuel system further by doing a OPS relay mod. and measuring my lift pump output/if any. And change my fuel filter.

I like this fuel vac switch idea, where did you mount the switches?

Depends. If you install it between the FM and Injector pump you can tell when either the lift pump has packed it in or the filter is clogged. if you put it before the FM but after the lift pump, you can tell when the lift pump packs it in. Mine is before the lift pump because I'm more concerned with monitoring my Raptor 100 lift pump (soon to have a dash mounted gauge for "real time" fuel pressure monitoring):

But, I also have a large 10 micron pre filer back by the fuel tank:

So my vac switch for the dash light is going just after the big pre filter. While there's never any guarantees, the pre filter should pack it in before the 5 micron FM filter with crud or gelling.

Be careful when building your fuel system, this stuff can be addictive .....and expensive:

That's about 7-800 bucks right there.

isn't their a monitoring device in the fuel manager? or does that only check for H2O in fuel?

FM only has a WIF sensor and a fuel heater

Have any of you guys used these $35 in-line performance chips they sell on e-bay? E-bay seems to be littered with them and judging from the add their the best thing since sliced bread. Just wondering if anyone has had good luck with them or if its a waste of time. they seem to be called "mind blowers" On that topic does anyone recommend something of that nature for performance gain, edge, bully dog, etc.?

Garbage. It's a resister in a fancy box. Usually, it just tricks the PCM into thinking the engine is colder than it is so it bumps up fueling a bit. Minimal gains at best, crap running engine at worst. Although it's hard to make a crap running diesel by adding fuel. Usually it just smokes and gets worse MPG.

Best advice is to avoid the "mind blower" altogether. Save the 30-40 bucks you would spend on it and get a custom tune done on your truck from Bill heath or one of the other 6.5 tuners. Much better results.

I found a bigger heat sink laying around and I decided bigger is always better right?

In this case, yes!

so I used that for my PMD, and mounted it behind the L-plate. let me know what you think,

You're off to a good start!

What about putting an eletronic fuel pres. sensor pre and post FM? could you then toggle your reading between one display? or is this a stupid waste of time?

Why do you (great white) think you need another fuel heater pre FM? Why do you use regular fuel pressure gauge if you have all those trick digital readouts in you cab could you hook up to that?

have you guys seen the Fuel Pressure Tap from PMD cable? what do you think about Hi-jacking the FM cap?

Nope, sounds fine. It woudl allow you to trouble shoot a clogging (or clogged) filter.

Why do you (great white) think you need another fuel heater pre FM?

It's integral to the filter head and uses warm return fuel to preheat the engine fuel. It's not plumbed right now because I'm having a hard time finding an adapter to go from the 1/2 fitings on the filter head to the 5/16 return line (big drop in size, but I'll work something out) . Preheating the fuel just helps it resist gelling in the lines on the way to the FM and it's electric heater, which only comes on below 54 F (I think the number was 54 F). The Filter head only warms the fuel feed below 60 F anyways, and since it uses return fuel to heat it's "no cost", unlike the electrically heated FM.

To further add to the confusion, the truck will also be getting a thermostatically controlled fuel cooler for summer.

I have tuning software for my 6.5 (think : $$$$) and want as many variables dialed out before I get into it heavy. Fuel temp is one of those variables.

Call it "over engineered" if you like. ;)

Why do you use regular fuel pressure gauge if you have all those trick digital readouts in you cab could you hook up to that?

Because I had it lying around and I don't have the digital gauge yet. The Raptor 100 is adjustable and I needed a gauge to adjust it. It may come off and the electrical gauge sender may go in that location.

Or I may just leave it on there because engine mounted gauges just look damn cool!

:hihi:

That would work fine too. It's "after" the filter media IIRC, so it should work for clogging (clogged) filter detection.

I think I might just order that fuel tap and a guage for time and easy sake, I could make up my own but I just don't have the time right now. I need to get this truck to a more "dependable" point before I have time for "cool" stuff. since that tap is post FM what do you think I should look for in terms of PSI if I have a clean filter and good LP? 8psi?

yes. It will tell you the health of the system pre filter. Good pressure should be 5-7 at idle and not less than 1 wot
