need some adivce here.. i bought a 6.5 here.. been running it for a few months now... was running kinda rough at start up. alittle gutless up hills so i took it in the the dealer an they replaced the turbo solenid... an said everything looks good . thats how the run. ect.. next day after maybe putting 50 k on her went to start it. would crank over with alot of white smoke. run rough like it was missing for about 3 sec an shut off. i towed it to the dealer. they came back at me sayingi need a new ip an advice me to replace the injectors too... with my experience with the 5.9 cummins. i cant see the injection pump just going like that.. would fire right away... im wondering if the pmd would have to do with any of this??????

First problem is taking it to the dealer :) Stay away from them if you can.

Need to know more about your truck. What year is it, any modifications?

truck is a 98 6.5. only thing done is a k&n filter. 325k on it. owner before said they change the ip pump 20,000 k ago... not sure if injectors were done though....

I would certainly suspect the PMD first at all times. Other thing you have to be familiar with is how to check the fuel lift pump (LP) on the frame rail under drivers door. If the LP is not working the IP will have a hard time pulling fuel all the way from the fuel tank. This would also make it more gutless. Although a non-functional turbo would too. A boost gauge is invaluable. Did you get a lot of black smoke while driving?

You can check fuel flow at the water/fuel drain on the tstat xover, but in cases like this its best to verify the pressure at the IP itself, because the drain is prefilter. Read up on this thread about the LP. http://www.thetruckstop.us/forum/sh...t-Pumps-amp-OPS-operation-and-troubleshooting

Your LP should run during the WTS period, while cranking and while the engine is running, but not just when key is on after the WTS.

Hard starting is typical of poor glow plugs or controller, but wouldnt cause it to stall out once it fires. I doubt poor injectors would as well, but if they have a lot of miles then they should be replaced/rebuilt.

Running for 3 sec with a miss then stalling could be injectors sticking open and getting compression blown in the lines. (air)

The above is good advice, however, on unknown mile injectors you can pull a couple out and have them tested in a diesel shop, not the GM dealer. Then you will know what shape they are all in.
