While driving down a bumpy road my truck just stopped running. Started up while still rolling in neutral. While driving home noticed my dash lights weren't working its dark out at the moment. Next day while running errands it wouldn't start up. After messing with the key position I got it to start but to keep it from turning off I had to turn it backwards but not passing the point of turning off the truck. While running if I turn the ignition key forward just a little out will shut off. Drove home but had to take the back roads tranny wouldnt shift. Started up and went to my brothers to look at the truck and it was shifting fine. Im guessing its a ground problem but dont know where to start. Thanks to anybody for their input.

Here's the Grounds Sticky from the Tech section.

This is where I started many years ago.

Start by making sure your PMD cable is correctly grounded to the IP and not the SSD Heat Sink on the intake. I wouldn't condemn the PMD just yet until you go through the grounds and use No Lox (Electrical Section of your Home Depot or Lowes) to ensure good/protected connectivity at the grounds and battery terminals.

Replace your ignition switch- if you have to selectively mess with it in an unusual fashion it is a goner. Repair a known problem before trying to chase ghosts.

The ignition switch is known to go bad. The trans also gets its power from the ignition switch. I would start there.

I just went through the ignition switch problem in my 99 classic K1500 Z71... I replaced the lock cylinder to end up with ignition switch problems, tore the ignition switch all apart and cleaned the contacts.. problem solved.
