Oil runaway?

Sheesh.....:rolleyes5:

If you've positively eliminated the pmd as not a cause, you've probably got an injection pump problem.

I believe a bad or failing fuel solenoid (the part the pmd drives) would cause a runaway condition were it to fail open. This would result in maximum fuel delivered on every stroke. Even if it's not responding to the PCM/PCM signal correctly, it could be allowing a pulse width in excess of what is being called for. These type of issues would lead to the engine driving up to topping.

Edit: Oopps. My aircraft background just kicked in there for a second, I should have said drive to redline or high rpm.

:p

Unfortunately, that pretty much means pump replacement so have it properly trouble shot first. Pumps aren't cheap.

There could also be something odd going on, like ferm's experience listed above.

I'm not sure if this has already been asked or not but are there any active or stored fault codes?this sort of info might not pinpoint your problem, but lead us down the right road....

the other thing about an oil runaway is the key would be useless

x2. Would not be able to shut it off.
I think it was Jim was talking on a seperate subject, but simular was a runaway due to environment being saturated with fuel, like at a gas well.

no check enigne light, went over the whole motor again, i think i will bite the bullet and get a pump, i cant get any help diagnosing it locally, no one will look at it. is there anything i should specifically look for when buying a pump?

There may still be codes without an active check engine light.

A pump is a big bullet to bite if it's not the problem.

Usially somewhere north of a $1000...

Can a pluged return line also cause this poblem? I know it will on some big rigs, but don't know if it will on these trucks also.

Based on the diagnosis that folks here and on DP helped me with, it sounds like your IP. I can't tell you for sure though since I have not completed my install yet. I am reworking the filtering and installing Leroy's lift pump all at the same time.
I also found it difficult to find any local help. The only 'diesel shop' around here that could help wanted almost what the truck is worth to work on it..:WTF: If you are MI you should be able to knock it out in a day. I am pretty OCD and only get to work on mine a few hours about every other week so it is taking me a while. I also got a rebuilt one for less than $700 including PMD online. Local shop wanted $1200 to rebuild it.:bs:

Seems you got what we used to call, when dealing with off shore vendors, a Japanese NO. That is price something high enough the customer will go away with out insulting him by saying no.

Maybe we need some way for those that are willing to help out in situations like this to indicate their locations and willingness. I don't mean necessarily to turn wrenches but to trouble shoot, advise, and report back to the thread that is trying to help. Sort of "expert" eyes and ears for the "hive mind" :D

Whats funny is I would rather hear a "no" than to be insulted by some outragous price. They also unwitingly loose my future business.

Well. This forum is the only reason I own the beast. It would not be an affordable venture otherwise. This is where the diagnosis happens....

DP has a members loan a tool and help out thread so folks can see who is in thier area and what equipment they have to offer and willingness to lend a hand/experience.

Might not be a bad idea to have a similar sticky thread here.

If a mod wants to put it together a new thread that the info can be posted and then organized by location might not be a bad idea.

My hat is in the ring and the current list of what I have is posted @ DP and can be coppied over here.

Is a member location google map interactive thingy possible? I am thinking locating helpers is going to be tough without some sort of zipcode based or some other distance search.

I've grown increasingly aware and wary of posting too much info on the net lately. That's why I gutted my Facebook a long time ago and haven't been there since.

Ie: located here (address, town, street, etc), have these tools in my garage, I'll be around on "x" dates, etc, etc....

Just a member willing to help and general location is about all I would want to see....email or pm could fill in the rest if needed...

Good point. There would have to be some process, like, start a thread with your issue, if the group thinks a local helper is needed then whomever is closest would be asked to join the thread (and if they are not available then the next), get up to speed and go have a look. Owners contacting helpers directly I think should be discouraged, so they wont get hammered with trivial stuff, and quit helping.
I was thinking like Meto area and state to find someone near you, not address details. A pin on a map sort of thing. The party's could then exchange that level of detail DM email or phone.

We are all just hanging out, discussing how best to deal with these situations, till OP get back to us. :)

That map if its found should also reflect a willingness to help. Not everyone can or is interested.

I don't remember doing any thing with a map when I signed up :nonod:
