i have a 1995 3500 4dr dually 5 speed 4x4. engine has 125000 miles it has a new injection pump module two weeks later driving down the road it went wide open throttle and has never came back down. it has been sitting for 5 months i go start it every week, it fires right up but immediately goes wide open i dont know what to do, any help would be much appreciated i really need this truck running and i dont want to put a bunch of money into it thanks

Welcome to TTS

By inj pump module you are referring to the PMD? What brand is it? Some of the Flight systems pmd's could cause that runaway. They also were sold under the Dorman name.

A broken IP armature will also cause a runaway.

the pdm was bought at oriley it worked fine for a couple weeks, i went back and got another new one after it messed up under warranty but did not fix the problem. i do not know what the ip is. could it be anything to do with the accelerator pedal system

IP is the injection pump. If one pmd went bad in 2 weeks the replacement may also be bad. There have been reports of some that were bad out of the box.

It is on a heat sync mounted on intake. How would I go about determining ip or pdm. Could could it have anything to do with the petals position sensor?

Also I had an ECM fail in my BURB years back that would cause the runaway randomnly. Normally though when the armuture screw breaks they go wide open throttle, or lope from idle to wide open really badly. PMD's can cause them to go wide open as well. As for determining which it is without sending your pump out, all you can really do is try known good parts.

thanks there are ablolutely no 6.5's around here and no test parts i've called all the diesel mechanics within 100 miles none of them will even work on it. im about to pull it out and stick a 12 valve cummins in it

I'd do some simple troubleshooting first. A 12 valve install is way more work, money, and problems than fixing the issue on the 6.5. You have come to the right place to get help with your 6.5. Look for Stanadyne dealers and they could point you in the direction of a good 6.5 mechanic. Although they will frown on the PMD brand and under hood heat sink.

The above advice for a PMD being bad is good. New parts do not mean "good parts" - never assume a new part is good. There was a known defective batch of PMD's that ran engines away.

Next check grounds esp for the PMD. Grounds from the batteries, ground on top of the IP, grounds by the trans dipstick. Check = take apart and clean hidden corrosion. Look at the PMD extension harness as the made in China cheap ones are not that good.

sorry ive been so long getting back. i finally got a chance to work on the truck actually had to drive it 5 miles to work on it. grounds all are good pdm swapped with known good and no change. while driving it, it seemed to calm down run about 2000 rpm but if i barely touch the accelerator at all it would bang wide open no inbetween. i dont mind throwing an injection pump in it but before i do i would really like to rule out ecm and pedal position sensor or am i barking up the wrong tree with those. the only time its not wide open is if there is a load on it, also while driving i had alot of smoke, but not alot of power but thats very hard to judge with the accelerator wide open. thanks for all the help.

Have you had this truck a long time or have your recently purchased it before experiencing this problem?

Reason I ask is I'm wondering what has been done to it.

The infamous "'optic bump" can cause a touchy throttle although going to full throttle is something I haven't heard of with an "optic bump" modification.

I wonder if an optic sensor failure could cause something like this?

Opinions from the peanut gallery?

;)

i have had the truck 3 years but the motor i replaced about 5 months before it acted up the motor was used with 125,000 miles but ran like a top and had alot more power than the old one but did smoke more and progressivley more right before it stuck open

sounds like runaway, from engine oil! look to see if oil is getting into intake. disconnect turbo, look for oil from turbo trying to get into intake.

I agree with your assessment. I thought about that as a possibility but since I have the attention span of a humming bird these days I forgot to post it. :willynilly: The possibility of a turbo oil seal failure has to be eliminated. Saw the aftermath of a big Cat V8 that ran away over a turbo fail, not pretty.
