I cannot help but wonder if the older 6.2 diesel engine with V-belts could fit a 94 Suburban that originally comes with the 6.5 TD? I came across a fairly inexpensive army 6.2 and that got me going. Does anybody know? Thanks

the 6.2 and 6.5 are about he same in size and weight. the late 6.2s even share the same block. as AK said make sure you get all the accessories with it. the WP runs backwards compared to the serpentine setup. the other option if it doesn't come with everything is to run a 6.2 with the serpentine setup. the late models came that way.

A 6.2 in a 6.5 'hole' here.. No complaints a'tall. But my swap was really easy. Mechanical inj. for mechanical inj.

Your '94 has electronically controlled injection. All your 6.5 'stuff' will bolt to a 6.2 'long block' assembly though. Depending on year of 6.2, you will need a longer turbo oil hose and don't forget to swap in the CPS reluctor. (the crank position sensor 'wheel')

Are you saying i could use the electronically controlled injection pump? Actually i got a spare pump but since they don't have the best reputation i thought the mechanical one would be an upgrade.

Yes, just swap over everything from your 6.5.

You will need a new timing chain set for your current year 6.5 to install on the 6.2. It'll have the reluctor mentioned earlier. The four 'tangs' of the reluctor is part of the lower timing gear. It's a good idea to get a new timing set as they wear kind of quickly in these engines.

Basically you will tear down both engines to this point:

Your current 6.5 oils the turbo from a port in the front right top of the block. The newer 6.2's have this port too. Older 6.2's do not so then you will then need to get the pressurized turbo oil from somewhere else. I chose to get mine from the OPS fitting on the left rear top of the block.

Converting from DS4 to DB2 is more involved. Do a search on Bobbiemartin here on TTS. The guy wrote a book on it.

I got a much better idea about it now.
My planes changed though. Out of sudden I got my hands on a cheep Cummins with the inline pomp. So I'm going to stay busy with that for a while. After the swap i might end up working on the 6.5 i'll be left with and attempt the DS4 to DB2 conversion and then put it in something.
Nevertheless thanks a lot.

I have a 6.2 running a DS4. Make sure you save the timing cover for the CPS sensor. Rest of the engine is cake to go serpentine belt. Water pump and backing plate plus timing cover - the cover that has the IP bolted to it is all you need from a 6.5 aside from the entire belt drive system. The bolt holes all work as far back as 1986 from the engine I have... 6.5 or 6.2 heads your choice. 6.2 heads are more involved and require bending injector lines etc.
