Hi, I'm new to this forum!, I'm in the UK and have at last picked up a 6.2 engine for decent money.
Having removed the sump I'm very pleased not to see any cracks, I'm sure the will be some small cracks when its pulled right down, but so far the engine looks ok to rebuild.
Quite fancy fitting a turbo on this, a question about fueling, the pump is ajusted for extra fuel but this means the fuel flow is rpm calibrated & not boost referenced.
With the popular turbos used on these engines, is the a cruising rpm that is not seeing boost but is running rich?.
I'm looking at economy but want some decent power as well!,
One other thing, can a 700R gas gearbox be used on a 6.2?, can you get a torque converter suitable for diesel torque power?
thanks!!!

Welcome to TTS!

Fill out your signature, so we know what chassis you are putting the engine in.

There is a low stall diesel torque converter for the 700R4, there should be other members that know where to get one.

What turbo are you using? What gear ratio are you using? This info will help answer questions over what boost and fuel to expect at certain speeds.

I've looked at my profile carn't see where you add details?,
As to the the engine, its going into a 1948 Buick lead sled.before any one slates me for this you need to understand that gas is $9-76 a US gallon in the UK! you think you pay too much???
So, my Buick has a 455 Buick big block, does about 7miles to the gallon!!. I make my own biodiesel costs me $2.50 a US gallon. thats why!
It has a 3:1 axle.
Don't have a turbo yet, used the chinese cheap copys & found them very good on other projects,
Thanks for your input...

Got pics of the 48? Sounds like a cool project, is it in good nic?
The 6.2 will be good once its sorted.
Do you get the TV show "wheeler Dealer" over there?

Sounds like it will be a nice car. I have dreamed of putting a 6.x in an old tank like that, sounds like a good plan to me.

How tall are the tires on the car? Rpms between 1800-2200 is what you want but depending on turbo, fueling, and gears you can really do what you want.

For a car a cko hx40II would probably work fine since you won't be towing and it's a light (compared to a crew cab dually) car.

Gotta put my two cents in, I drive my 6.2 dually without a turbo on veggie oil n have plenty of power, looks to me like no turbo would be easier to set up n very adequate power n better economy. Mine gets 20 plus mpg around town on veggie blend.

I forgot say,not seen or heard of the show '' wheeler dealer'', whats that about other than dealing in cars?

X2 on better MPG without a turbo. Make sure you match the precups to what you are doing. 6.2 NA precups do not like turbo's and smoke too much. They do deliver MPG without the turbo however. Find some diamond precups if you are going with a turbo.

The whole world is getting screwed on fuel prices. Only CNG is affordable alternative fuel at this time.

Pulled a couple of bearing caps off today, the motor is in very good condition. I was going to re-ring & shelll it, but I'm sure its fine, ( the oil filter has a label stating 78,000 miles) looks like thats all its done.
Should I use it as is, if not going turbo?, or is it worth doing + arp head bolts as well?

The price of Chevy/Ford stuff is a lot more over here in the UK,( & harder to find) so with that in mind, I have a Ford AOD box in my stash of parts.I would this be ok, on a non turbo 6.2?

Nice car,
Wheeler Dealer" is a show based in UK. The main guy buys an old car then brings it back to the shop where another guy fixes them up. They then resale the car. I like it and its funny to hear see the differences in the way we speak

I've found a 700r4 box with the following details,
87 Trans - 7YMMY00590868-346A
Pump Number 8654737
Casting Number MD8
Would this work ok with just a change on the stall speed? thanks

I have an 83 Chev half ton pickup that is set up with a 700R4, so the diesel torque convertor is out there, just don't know for sure where to tell you to look for one. The 700R4 did have a lot of problems early on in the 80's. 87 is about mid cycle for the 700R4 so I don't know how many stock upgrades had been given to it at that point. The big thing to keep in mind is that there are aftermarket upgrades available for it.

The 700R4 did morph into the electronic controlled 4L60E in the mid 90's. I have a 97 Chev Astro van with the 4L60E, and have towed a 5000 pound travel trailer with it with no mechanical problems. It currently has almost 240 thousand miles on it and it's still going strong.

By the way, I can remember my parents having a Buick of that era back in the mid 50's (that was before I was in school), I think it was a 49, but not sure. I vaguely remember it had a straight 8 motor in it.

Nice car, I had a 47 Chev "Style Master" I was going to fix up out of high school. I would love to put a diesel in one of these old cars.

My 82 has a 700R4, I am not sure of its casting date but it has the K stamped in the side which means it is a thicker casting meant for a 4x4. There are plenty of 700r4 trannys going down the drag strip, they can hold decent power when built right. Biggest thing to watch out for is don't lug 4th too hard or you will need a rebuild pretty quick.

Can any one tell me what stall speed I would need? thanks for all your help!

I've asked on a uk hot rod site for a low stall torque converter, some has stated that one from a gas engine would not be up to the job!.
I find this hard to believe, the 6.2 is stock, no towing, what do you think?

Not sure what the shipping costs are but you might have to order from our side of the pond. We have a few members on your side and they might not a diesel shop that knows where to get what you need.
