4l80e with Diesel 6.2 in a 48 Buick! need advise on the box!

Is that because the shifts are too harsh?

For me no, it shifts very smooth. I just dont want the extra work it takes to drive a full manual (Im lazy) It is simular to a manual trans in that whatever gear you select is the gear it stays in, so if you forget and come to a stop when you start up again it will bog down. Also if you were in OD you can stall the engine. I have a switch to ingage TC loc up, so thats one more thing to remember each time. When you get up to speed flip the switch to lock up, then back off when you decrease speed or engine will bog.
Both pretty minor conserns, but it gets old real fast in a daily driver.

Ah, Seperate Tc lock up switch. I did a tach sensor control so that when my engine would go 1400 rpm (just above my stall speed) the tc would get the signal to lock up. When the engine would decelerate below 1400 it would unlock. So every shift I did was with a solid converter. Not cozy, but fun when playing around.
That Leroy is why you sit at the front of the class, while I was sleeping in the back row & making goofy choices tearing up rear axles and ujoints.
 
I'm thinking MAYBE!! Because with one of these starters I could use my cast steel bellhousing. I'm collecting parts to put a 6.2 or 6.5 NA into my 1971 Toyota FJ40 Landcruiser. Over a year ago I took a chance on buying an old cast iron GM BH. To give you an idea of age it just so happens to be set up with the old style starter mounting holes in the BH. But the starter swell in that BH is too small for the diesel starter. The mounting hole for the tranny input bearing retainer is the smaller early opening (don't remember the size without going out and measuring).

While recently rummaging through my odds-n-ends I realized I had a "newer" BH with the larger starter swell which is correct for the diesel starter, but it is cast aluminum. If I can just get past the fact that it is aluminum, and wrap my mind around the idea that it is probably as strong as the cast steel BH I'll use it instead of the cast steel BH. However, it does have the later style larger opening for the tranny input bearing. So, if I use this BH I'll need to source a spacer to allow my tranny with the smaller input bearing retainer to be able to center in the larger opening. I'm not a machinist, and have no access to a lathe even if I knew how to use one.

Can any one paste a link to info regarding how the 4l80e box works?, a friend who is an electronics designer has offered take a look & may be able to build me a controller.

But seriously, look up Bowling & Grippo.. They were the (IIRC) masterminds behind the DIY 'Megasquirt' strand alone EFI computer KITS. It's been a while but I recall them working on implementing some control capabilities for the 4L80E... either stand alone or on board with MS...

I know nothing about what it takes to fire the solenoids.. I do know that some of GM's torque converter lock-up strategies over the years were PWM..or Pulse Width Modulated. As far as the trans, maybe Serial Data? :dunno:
 
If parts are expensive , have you tried the local yards for the earlier 6.2/4L80E ? I have a 91 R3500 that has that combo in it . I have also collected enough parts to assemble my truck with this style system . Pretty simple , probably have to burn a chip depending on the rear tires/ratio . The G vans also had this setup . 91-93 was different than the later models . Not saying don't use Leroy , just might be another option . Ebay is good for the GM manuals as well . Just a thought .
 
Is the more than one option on Transgo kits for the 4l80e?.
With a Transgo shifter kit, what shifter do you use? my car has a rachet shifter that controls a TH400.
Other than fitting the Transgo kit, what else do you do, what about the electrical socket on the side? thanks
 
Not sure how many kits may be available. Mine is a 4L80E-S. Any shifter that accomidates a 4 speed will work.
Leave the big connector alone and use the pins needed to connect the converter lock up switch.
