Well last night or real early this morning depending on how you look at it my tranny quit me. I was backing into a spot at a local watering hole going to a going away sendoff for some fellow service members when reverse quit working. Thought well crap something I'll have to fix, parked it and went in. Came out later and started to go home but only got down the street about a half a mile when it downshifted and then seemed to slip. Revved it up a little and made no more speed. Called the wife and told her to meet me at a friends of ours house and limpped it there. Best I can figure is the input shaft snapped. My question is, what spline count is the input shaft and where can I find one? I checked monster transmission and found a complete rebulid kit and torque converter but need the spline count for the correct one, 30 or 35. I figure with 242000+ on the odometer it's probably best to rebuild now while I'll have it out anyway. Anyone have a manual on the 4L80E that I could buy or borrow/copy(if electronic). I was planning on doing the rebuild later but I guess the Blazer had other plans:mad2:. Thing is I still love my truck and have no intention of replacing it, might consider ading another vehicle to drive occasionly, maybe a Samauri.......hmmmm one with a Volkswagen TDI sitting between the framerails would be sweet. Anyway any help will be apprecieated.

I have heard a common problem with the 4l80e is the oil pump regulator can stick to high pressure and when you put it into reverse it breaks the reverse band or clutch pack something like that. There is some sort of up date for the regulator to solve that problem.

Thanks, good to know. I did lose reverse but I also lost drive so I'm confused. It drove off like normal until it hit drive and then started to act up. I guess I'll have to get it to the shop and see what I can figure out.

bulkpart transmission has most of the internal parts for a 4l80e. I'd give you the link to their ste but I don't know how to do that.

Thanks so far guys, the truck is getting towed to the tranmission shop a quarter mile from the house for diagnosis. I'l report back when I know more but it sounds like its the 3rd reverse clutch pack. I'll most likely pull it myself and take it to them for a rebuild and stab it back in. Hoping thats the most cost effective route. Hey 242000 out of a factory transmission ain't bad. I'm not sure how well it was serviced since new but I know that when I changed the fluid and filter it was definatley in need of it.

Got the truck towed to a local AAMCO. WOW!!!! Ok first lets start with I have an degree in auto/diesel tech from UTI. I talk to first guy and he gets the truck towed and says they will test drive it and scan it and give me an estimate for repair. No big deal. He calls me and tells me my truck is there and they are about to test it. I give it a few and walk over (the shop is like quarte mile from house). I get there and the tech is still doing the scan.

I wait till second guy calls me into the office. He tells me it has some codes (already new that from my scan) and I have no reverse, second or third and when it hits OD it downshifts (yeah kinda noticed that myself!!). Anyway I ask for the estimate.....base price to R&R, overhaul 1500 something.

Ok I ask how much for me to bring you the transmission and hve you overhaul it? He say well it would be same price less the labor to R&R, I ask how much is that He says something like 484 or something. Second guy says to me well with all the electronics on these newer cars (1994 is newer???)

I wouldn't reccomend that as you could mess up the torque converter or something else and end up costing you more and if we do it you will have a 1 year warranty which I tell him wont do me any gooed because I transfer to Italy later this year. He says we offer a three year warranty and I say I'll be there for three years, he says "Military?" I say yes and his eyes light up and he stops listening to me and starts thinking how he can make some money.

I explain to him that I have a degree in this stuff and I have recently pulled the engine out and replaced the clyinder heads. Second guy goes out to shop and ask tech if (thinking I can't hear through the single pane of glass) Hey he doesn't have any forward gears in that does he? I couldn't hear the tech's reply but I already know the answer.

Yes 1st gear like you said dummy!! While hes out there I sneak a peek at his screen and see Labor for the R&R is like 600 somthing. Well he comes back in and about that time First guy comes back from lunch and compliments me on how nice my truck is and said the tech was impressed with how clean it was under the hood and that I obviously took care of my stuff.

I told him that I had recently taken the engine out for other work and took advantage and cleaned up the engine bay while I was there. First guy ask if they are taking care of me and second guy chimes in with "We are trying to but he won't let us help him!" I said all I need is a price to rebuild the tranny and second guy ask me if I would just like a quote on a reman unit for install.

I said sure because at this time I totaly ticked of at this A-HOLE for thinking he could try to scare me into spending my money on something I don't need or want from him!!! I know when I worked in shops the only real rule on this was if you pull the tranny/engine whatever and we fix it was that we use our parts not yours and no warranty. I have no problem with that.

We always figured making a lil was better than making none at all. Guess this idiot never heard of that. He has is about cost the place a customer, as of right now I called First guy after I took a walk and calmed down, explained it to him and told him what I wanted to do. He is suspose to call me back and let me know. WhileI had him on the phone I told him what went down with the idiot and that I didn't apprecieate it one bit. I'll let you guys know how this goes. BTW anyone got a manual on rebuilding a 4L80E that I could buy or use/copy?

TD edit Dude it's okay to use paragraphs here :D as you see I added some breaks so I could read it

Just found a used transmission here: www.everdrive.com, Great price and a three year unlimited mileage warranty!!
Should be here by Friday!! Let you know how it works out, BTW I spoke with Ashley, Very helpful, her ext is 3127. Hope thats allowed MODS, if not fell free to delete.
Oh BTW huge thanks to my lil wife whos persistance paid off in finding this one. Man I love that lil lady!!!!!

I went to Aamco a few years back with a gasser having TCC lockup
problems, went in and explained to the guy at the desk what it was
doing, and was told "you need to have it rebuilt"
Not, "we'll check it out for you" or similar.
I told the guy "At this point you haven't checked it, in fact you don't even
know what color the truck is, but you know I need it rebuilt?"
I'll never set foot in Aamco again, and I spread this story every chance I get.

(Another tranny shop figured out that I had a stopped up cat, and it
was causing the problems)

AAMCO notorious for gouging customer $2200 complete with R&R was my last rebuild with HD clutches and billet torque converter, shift kit, my reverse went as well, or it got intermittent, the band was slipping (common problem) easily fixed but you have to tear down trans to replace the part, so while in there mite as well freshen it up.

Did you guys google this company for feedback of others that have used them, that price looks too good to be true,

Wife found them online, but I talked to them on the phone and so far all seems well. They are located in Richmond VA so I had to pay state tax cause I'm in Va Beach. Trust me I'll let you guys know if they try to rip me off. The parts are used but no core charge or shipping and 3 year warranty was to good to pass up.
Having it sent to the auto hobby shop on base and should be there by Friday so I can start working on it Saturday. I plan on having it done by Sunday or Monday morning at the outside cause I plan on doing some upgrades like relocating my oil cooler and adding an extra tranny cooler and an external tranny filter. Also gonna clean up the underside of the Blazer and spray on some bedliner for rust proofing/soundeadening.

Oh yeah, best part about the whole AAMCO thing was the tow. It only cost me 50 bucks to get the truck to within a quarter mile of the house and I was able to drive it in 1st to get it home. Plan on driving it Friday night around midnight after work to get it on base. Hoping trafic will be a lot less at that time so when I drive at like 15-20mph I'll tick off fewer people.:D

The Problem with AMMCO's is that they are Franchises. Some are great some are crooks. I purchased my truck with the Transmission "Welded in forward" Trany lines broke on the highway and it over heated. I paid $2000 for a rebuild with 3 year warranty and a year later I broke the Planetary gear (not part of a rebuild) but he fixed it under warranty and loaned me his Truck to tow my trailer on Vacation. This guy was suggested to me from a elevator Mechanic that builds Hot Rods. So They are not all bad But with any Trany Shop I always say you need to know people that will stand up for them.
