2006 silverado 2500 HD automatic

Welcome Teddy, I would start off by checking the trans fluid for level, color and smell. also make sure all fuses are good since this is an electronic trans, but even with a blown fuse you should still have a forward and reverse gear.

what's the mileage on your rig and when was the last service done. any other issues or things that might have led to this over time?

if all checks out, it could also be a shifter cable come loose from the trans or column / broken cable. that would be the best outcome.

welcome aboard Cliff.
I’m thinking maybe @dbrannon79 has pretty much nailed it.
Block wheels so it can not roll.
Crawl under and look at position of shift arm on the transmixer.
Insert key in ignition and turn to run position, press hard on brake pedal, turn key to off, if it will, back under with You and now observe position of shifter.
If it has not moved, someting wrong.

200,000 miles just bought it. Linkage works, fluid isn't horrible fuses are good. I'm thinking it's the sun shell in the transmission

Sounds like someone possibly slapped a band-aid on it to sell and suckered you into it. is it from a dealer or individual? used car dealers around my area are known to do this to folks and will claim "as is no warranty" in the contracts. I recall something here in TX passed recently where dealers can get into trouble doing this sort of thing. essentially they extended the lemon law to cover used vehicles for a short period.

if this is not the case, and it's fully yours. I would start out by dropping the pan and inspecting. the PO might have done a fluid and filter change just before the sale. there are some snake oils that can be added that I call "clutches in a bottle" they do help in some cases but if the trans is too far gone, it's game over time for a rebuild.

was there any noises it made leading up to this? that might help tell what happened. thoughts are TCC bolts to the flexplate, or if the PO did a fluid and filter change but didn't replace the press fit seal on the filter nor seat the filter into the seal fully causing the filter to fall out and now floating in the pan.
