I have a 95 dodge 3/4 ton p/u with a 5.7 gasser. Looking at a low km 97 cummins. Do you need the puter to run these? or just for the tranny? Thanks

No computer for any of the 12V's.

Add fuel and watch it go.

If you want it easy, for the transmission get a 47RH (hydraulic) vs a 47RE (electronic) and you won't need any computers to run it.

sorry for the hijack

but silly question...

but if you went with a 12v and 47RH would this actually protect you in the event of an EMP...just thinking in case their is tough times ahead...

Well, techically, yes.....

Once the 12V is started, it requires no electrical system to run.

But the alternator would take beating and you won't be charging the batteries for the next start.

And I REALLY wouldn't want to try and turn it over by hand......it's bad enough rotating it over to adjust the valves.

hmmm...wonder if there is a way to shield the alternator...or maybe just keep a spare in a lead box with a handful of silica packets?

Don't the gauge clusters have something to do with the charging system in those trucks, or is that first gen CTDs? I thought there was some alternator/charging system voodoo BS that went through the cluster, which can short out.

The problem there isn't the gauge cluster, it's the crank position sensor.

When the crank position sensor fails, obviously the tach quits working. When the tach quits working the alternator doesn't get any reference for charging and that's what kills the charging system.

It's not really the cluster, that's just one thing that is noticed with the failure.

what is it with diesels and failing crank position sensors? The 7.3 has the same issue, only when the CPS fails, the whole engine shuts down and wont start again until a new, working one is installed.

Also in the event of a biological attack does putting your ac on recirculate protect you more than just closing the windows???

This was discussed very heavily at Steel Soldiers. Being a CUCV owner I was curious and the general consensus was if an EMP is strong enough to wipe out the alt or ESO you aint gotta worry about a GTFO Vehichle anyway. The Duece and a half is the only vehchile that can fully withstand an EMP from what I read but again if it's that close , that strong, your done anyway. As Mr Miagi say...Best way aviod punch, no be there. My CUCV is set up with a 100 gal transfer tank for extra fuel and a hitch to tow my camper if we need to GTFO quick.

BTW, on that Cummins, make sure it's not a 53 block. I think they were only in the 24v's also the KDP. Fix that while you got it out.
