A lot of money. Seriously, what is your budget? Bulletproof is a fun term but unrealistic.
The more you invest, the better off it will be.
Rip apart what you have to see if anything is salvageable.
how are you using the rig?

DONT BUY ANYTHING without asking first, there are a ton of fip off places, parts. And based on budget determines what is most important.
 
I just was about to order new heads to start and ARP Studs

You should do your research on the different heads out their, all but GEP & p400 heads are off shore castings . I do a lot of heads yearly for these motors and I have seen them all, you get what you pay for...

If you plan to work the motor and plan to keep it then you should consider spending where is counts...

I have P400 heads in stock and can also offer GEP heads...

 
So are you going to put new heads on it and keep stock turbo at stock boost and stock fueling? If so, new head bolts are ok. If you are trying to make an improvement then head studs. Don’t make the huge mistake of finding cheapest heads or you will get practice again very soon at removing those cheap heads. If your broke then rework your heads. Otherwise optimizer heads or p400.

Are you 100% the rest of the engine is good? Imo it is better to rip the engine out and all apart to fix everything at once instead of just doing the heads if you can. A common thing I here when helping people on these engines is 1 year after they started the repairs “Dang I wish I planned out the whole engine from the beginning.”

If you cant afford it all right now, plan it out and build it in stages.

Learn about the head stud leak and fix options before buying. Head studs are NOT the right answer for everyone. You are trading one risk for another.

Are you happy with the stock power and mpg?
Any issues getting hot you want to address better while apart? 220 is overheating to the point of pull over, 210 you better watch the temp gauge as much as the road. Ignore the nonsense you hear from the company wanting to sell you new engines or new trucks. Military says 240, but they cant get 50,000 miles from and engine.

Take the time to learn all the issues and how you are going to address them before you start or you will have the regrets others learned the hard way.

Let me guess you let it get over 210 on the temp gauge. Maybe you got 200K on the engine and the one use TTY head bolts simply let go from miles.

If you got it hot enough to pop the head gasket the rings are toast. It will be blowby central after it gets running again unless you replace the rings. You may have other cracks like the top of #8 cylinder including the main webs.

@Twisted Steel Performance would be one place to start to build a brand new bullet-proof engine. These engines are still in production with improvements. New trucks cost $60K so keep that in mind when you look at around $15K for an engine and: The restrictive for towing GM turbo also needs to go away. The GM 6 blade fan and low output water pump needs to be upgraded to a spin on and 9 blade fan or Duramax fan. New engines alone are under $10K, but, I guess at what TSP would want to coat the heads etc. At the minimum for towing I would have every coating possible put on the damn heads. Chris can explain why.

Maybe you fix it, sell it, and buy a better used diesel for hauling the trailer. It would be cheaper and the newer DI diesel would hold up better under towing use. (Except a Ford 6.0.) Even a gas rig gets as good of MPG towing as the stock 6.5 does esp. on grades. So a gas rig may be a better truck to get.
