OK for the past few days I push in the clutch, there is a rubbing sound (but not always), I figure it is the throwout bearing, and today the tranny was grinding going into reverse. I shut the truck off and put it in reverse and restarted the truck, parked it, then everything was OK. If I have to pull the tranny and replace the pressure plate and the plate, disk, should I look at installing a solid flywheel? How do I know if it has a dual mass without pulling anything first? And is a solid flywheel a direct replacement for the dual mass? (All this after I said I'd rather have a standard)
What is the possibility it is the master or slave or both?

Thanks AK, But what I need to know is when I change the pressure plate, disk, pilot bearing and throw out bearing.....Should I keep the dual mass fly wheel, or should I hunt down a used or new solid flywheel?

Haven't heard many good things about dual mass flywheels on any diesel. I would go solid flywheel and South Bend clutch...last time you'd have to touch that area for a looong time. :D

I tore the truck apart, two bolts holding the cross over exhaust pipe broke, I found a dry pilot bearing, a dry throwout bearing, the dual mass flywheel was floppy, one of the springs in it was rubbing on something. The disk was in good shape tho. I also found one of the oil gallery plugs was only screwed in 2 1/2 turns and was weaping, I repaired that, retapped the threads for the crossover pipe, installed a heavier starter cable and wired her up for a solonoid near the battery for staring. Tomorrow I do ujoints....

Some did, some didnt. Seems the only way to find out if you have one or not is to pull it apart. All the reasearch I did on my 96 stated that I had a dual mass.....so after ordering a clutch for the dual mass, I dropped the tranny to find a solid flywheel. And that was the original clutch.
