1992 gmc 3500 build thread

did you cut the hood to make the cowl? Id like to get a fiberglass cowl hood for my rig.

yeah, i just cut 3 sides of it and pulled it up and cut my side pieces to fit, after i mig welded everything in place..... i would love to have a spot welder for doing that kind of work.... the mig is too hot and warps the light metal, oh well, just means more finishing to make it look good... on a side note it is strong enough to stand on and it is fully functional as cowl induction....

I was looking in a jegs catalog and they have metal cowls for around $150. I think a cowl hood is about $400. I may buy one of those and tig weld it. I bought a hobart mig, tig, and stick welder. It needs some work so if I get it running I should be able to use it. The guy said the tig works but when I played with it at home the valve for the gas isnt working. I never tried to make a arc. A tig welder would probably be the best way to go if you have alot of time.

I have a millermatic 200 and its burns through exhaust pipe if you weld more then 1in.

here is our "day at the machine shop".....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pgk9z2R8ldA

so we had to deck the block .0115" today... she was a little ugly and banana according to fast eddy our machinist.... also had the cam bearings installed as well.... he had to hot-tank the block 3 times to get the oil and crap out of the galleries..... she is almost brand new-used again...LOL

on another note, we asked the owner of the machine shop where all the new blocks are coming from and if they were machining them..... he said they machine new blocks there, and almost spitting he said and i quote " all of it is coming from china now...." he also includes the AM general blocks in that as well.... food for thought again.... like one poster said in the "canadian made blocks" thread, there is good chinese and crap chinese castings , well, which is which?

That's terrible, and just when you were getting somewhere with the 6.5. I hope you have good insurance.
