I got this truck off a friend thinking all it needed was the 4x4 front axel and the syncro in 3rd, well I was wrong. I got it home and as soon as i parked it the clutch pedal completly froze up (thinking slave cylinder, or the throwout bearing? ANY IDEAS) the truck only has 307000 kms I did notice a little clunking coming from the clutch/t-case/transmisson area :WTF: and as soon as i would disengage the clutch it would go away but now i cant even disengage the clutch.

With the problems aside im looking for opinions on what i should do with it, what its worth, easiest way of fixing the problems:thumbsup:

So far what i know;
Needs front axel inorder for 4x4
syncro in 3rd gear is gone
body is fair condition 7/10
interor is rough 5/10
engine runs great
needs glowplug work
mysterious clutch malfunction?

Right now it looks like :suicide: would be a good idea, but i know this truck would be great all fixed up, but right now im just curious what its worth, what would it take to fix it, and what it would be worth fixed up

Thanks for reading, any and all feedback would be nice! :)

what do you plan on using it for? plow, daily driver, parts hauler, etc. how much did you give for it? do you have spare cash or will it be a piece at a time until it's a driver? if you didn't get it for too much, it would prob be worth putting 500-750.00 into. clutch would be the first fix but you need to determine if the t-case it going to be able to be fixed and front axle. get a ballpark price on repairs at a shop, see how much parts cost them and figure that will be how much it would cost for you to do it, without labor.

Trucks probably worth 3,000 Tops in good running order IMO.

Rebuilt trans and Clutch will be 1,000 ish
Salvage yard drive shaft maybe $100

All this and you still have a 150HP truck but it will get 20+ US MPG

Well I figured out what was wrong with the clutch, however there is still a little noise coming from the clutch ( assuming the throw out bearing :/ ) So im thinking im going to replace my glow plugs, fix up the axel and drive it as is, untill i get the cash $$$$ to do a Allison 6 spd swap :)

You might want to stick with your 5speed NV4500.

An allison robs power through parasitic loss, the allison itself isnt cheap, and the standalone allison computer isnt cheap at all.

Fix the 5 speed, most would kill for a good one, I know I would. Both my trucks have been abused and the trannies did not like it.

Everyone tells me to keep my 5 spd because of the value, but put the allisons 6spd in for dependability.

5 speed is dependable. use right oil, upgrade synchros. compare that 500.00 to the allison's 3000.00 and see if it's worth it. remember, you have fab time, computer, trans(rebuild), linkage, mounts, flywheel, TC, driveshaft, etc etc.......

Switch to the 4L80 if you want a reliable auto tranny.

I think the allison will suck too much power from your already low on power 6.2

Anyone know some cheap upgrades i can do to get a bit more power out of her? how much will rebuilding (upgrading) my nvt4500 run me? any other sugestions on what i could do.

I havent rebuilt one myself but I have watched a few how to's and you can rebuild the NV4500 for fairly cheap and it doesnt look terribly hard.

Once you get the tranny lined out source a turbo kit. A set up from a 92-00 6.5 will be a direct fit or build custom manifolds and set a hx40 on it.

quad 4x4 dot com will be a great place to buy tools, parts, the special oil, and rebuild manuals. I need to get off my lazy ass and re-do a few, but like tanman said, they look easy compared to others.

keep the 5 speed, and me personally, I would keep it NA. get some fuel economy! :)

excellent point deejaaa.

after buying my K2500, I see why everyone complains! Between the turbo AND the 4wd components, that thing is a nightmare! even greasing it is a bitch compared to a 2wd. after the rest of the fleet gets repaired while the K2500 is on the road, it will be sold before I need to re-tag it next year. got my boss and a good buddy begging to buy it, both are good homes, so I wont feel bad at all letting that one go! and 2012 will be over, and if we make it, my need for a possible armagedon rig (aka 4 wheel drive) diminishes greatly....

to the OP, what is the 4wd issue? most likely it is just the actuator that needs changing if it isnt working.
