Welcome to the forum!
You smell diesel - same as a gas engine: something is leaking. You fixed a leaky pipe that I can only assume was a hose. I suggest you continue replacing all the fuel hoses due to age. Checking for a leak should include the injector return lines as these will drip on a manifold and cause a strong diesel smell. Injector lines also can leak. Check the IP for leaks dripping into the engine valley. (Front seal, advance piston on the bottom side, turn up the screw side triangle gasket, top cover, and hoses incl return hoses off the IP.) The filter housing is known to have weak areas that can leak.
IMO your 1/4 feed line to the center of the IP may be leaking due to how much fun it isn't to get to.
X2 on who cares about a code. Seriously all the computer does is run the EGR and EPR. IMO the EPR closes during cold weather to heat the intake manifold and this is the only benefit to you. EGR is not a benefit to you. I would plug the EGR line and be done with it. After all many 6.2's run without EGR and EPR. The rest of your engine is mechanical and runs without a computer. Think 1970's or older gas engines here. You may need to pull the EGR valve and clean it - likely the last owner plugged the EGR line already...
