Hello,

Can anyone help me, i just bought a 1990 1500 6.2l diesel, after many days of work shes up a running and will idle for hours and run.

now while driving she will cut out, when it comes to a stop I can crank the starter and it will turn over very fast but wont fire up.

After getting the truck home on a tow truck you turn the key and she fires up straight away.

Any ideas? :mad2:

Thanks in advance.

as the worn out IP gets warm the tolerances inside get loose. the water cools it and tightens up the tolerances.

okay leaky inlet pipe at fuel filter

Okay finally got around to taking a look at this truck again.

I had a leaky pipe at the inlet on the fuel filter. Strong odor of diesel.

I also had a loose battery cable on the aux battery.

I also pulled a code 33 of the computer, any one know what it means?

DTC 33 - EGR Control Pressure/Baro Sensor Circuit High

6.2s are mech IP. I wonder if that code means something else possibly tranny related. Seems you found your problem. The problem mentioned with the worn IP and water won't cause the truck to stall while driving. That will cause the truck not to start when hot after being shut off.

the story continues

okay worked on this one another day.....got a new map sensor installed it ...it comes up with the same code 33 .....

also decreased it today. cleaned it really good used compressed air to dry it ...I had a ground on the back of the engine on the passenger side cover in oil so cleaned and decreasing the order of the day... still the same code ..

Engine runs and idles and gets up to temp ...i can turn it off and on while its hot.

:mad2:

I wouldn't worry about it. Mech IP won't affect it. In fact lose the egr if it has one. All they do is scum up the intake. How are you checking codes ? What is it OBD1 ??? My 90 and my 91 had no computer. My 91 had a TCM and both had something for the ABS that was it.

both mine had mech Lp's. I removed them and converted to electric.
It just occured to me that we may be talking about two different trucks though. When I saw 1500 6.2 I assumed a Blazer or Jimmy but if it's a pickup it's an entirely different truck.

1990 chevy silverado 1500 pick up truck

Hello

The truck is a 1990 Chevy Silverado 1500 pick up 6.2L Diesel truck.

it has a electric fuel pump underneath the drivers door bolted onto the frame.

It has a DECS (Diesel Electronic control system) ECM

I think its a OBD 1 ...12 pin connector, you short terminals (a) and (b) with a paper clip and it pulls the codes from the computer. Codes flash on the service engine light giving you the fault code.

The OBD 2 system on later trucks uses a 16 pin connector.

Ok good,

There are o-rings that seal all the different sections of lines. Supply and return. They can and will deteriorate. Orings are a lot cheaper than an IP. That is, if bad orings are found.

Does this truck have a 'box type' fuel filter?

yes a box filter connected to the back of the intake manifold...I believe its a "standyne model 80 fuel filter" ... was leaking really bad with a wix fuel filter lots of air in the system. Replaced it with an ac delco filter no more leaks i hope.

You mentioned o rings, where do I need to look for them?

There are two at the tank sender (real fun), two at the LP and right by the LP theres a union with one more.

And I can't tell you for sure about how the box filter seals up. Any orings there?

Sounds like fun,

I think I still have a fuel leak somewhere because you can smell diesel after you turn it off, electric fuel pump looks tight no leaks, only thing i can think of is pipes between lift pump to the inlet of the fuel filter these pipes run up the side of the transmission. I degreased this engine pretty good the other day..... ill use some shop towels to find out which pipe its leaking from

I will be working on loose vacuum hoses next week hopefully it will sort out code 33.

will post an update on Thursday to busy with work at the moment.

EGR

Have a whole bunch of wires going to egr solenoids 3 of them in total, one of them is for the EGR.... one of them is for EPR..... and one of them is for the transmission for the overdrive lock up.

more trouble shooting for next week....ive worked on gas engines for 20 years.................... treading new ground here and a learning experience also in diesel country.
