Not mine. 2006 Jetta 1.9L TDI 116K on the clock.

Going down the road and the engine shuts down. Will not re-fire. Towed home.

Things we know so far:

Timing belt replaced 4 months ago preventative maintenance. All is good here, valvetrain moves.

Getting fuel to IP.

Tach works when cranking, rules out CPS.. (maybe?)

Any and all ideas welcome.

Are you getting any engine codes? I realize that VW uses their own proprietary OBDII codes. Sounds like something electrical.

Fuel filter? Mine was clogged to shit on our 06. it never died just dident have the power and when u change it u turn ignition off and on about 3 timed to refill filter housing if it don't fill u might have a bad pump...

That what we're leaning towards. In the process of getting the scanner.

PMD? :hihi:

Umm, nope. Wish it was that easy..

Water build up in intercooler?

Tried a start with engine charge tube OFF. We made sure the flapper in there was open.

Recent filter change from what I could gather. It did pump fuel to the IP. Disconnected supply line and cranked starter, got a good stream of diesel.

Further, the owner reported an instant shut down, no sputter, fishbite, noise or anything.

Cam position sensor..

Unplugged it'll run all day long.

Evidently it 'sees' both either/or cam and crank sensor to fire off the squirts.

Learn something new everyday...

Ran into a similar deal on a GM 3100 gasser. It had both cam and crank sensors. Kind of like exploratory surgery.. :D

And a little intuitive luck.

Just to clarify, are you suggesting leaving the cam position sensor unplugged permanently? Or just to find the problem? And can this be done for any vehicle or just the VW?

Cam position sensor was replaced on the VW.

Most OEMs have both crank and cam sensors nowadays. Sort of a double redundancy thing. Maybe over time an engine will pick up 'slop' between the cam and crank. Maybe the 'puter averages the two values.. Don't really know exactly how..

On an '00 GM 3100 there are both cam and crank sensors. Cam unplugged it'll still fire off. This is how I came about the 'experiment' above..

Sigh of relief, especially on a TDI VeeDub... $$$ to fixie at dealer.

I have been reading a lot lately on these. The MAF sensor also causes a lot of quirky little problems like the ones you experienced.

A friend of mine experinced a similar problem, drove the car...parked it, and would not start again.
Towed to a shop, thet spendt hours on it with no result, finally they called the dealer
I was low on oil, and would not start for safety... some level sensor kicked in

You ever on Fred's TDI forum, I'm a 2001 1.9L TDI guy don't know much about the newer ones, VAG-COM is a must have tool for these IMO load the software on your laptop and you have same diagnostic capability at dealers for about the same cost as 2 diagnostic visits, plus you can do diagnostics for others for cost of a donation whatever the traffic will bear from other VW owners in your area, works on gasser VWs as well.

My 01 Jetta's EGR valve would clog up after a couple of years. Increase in black smoke for a couple of months and then "GAG." No start, completely blocked off with soot. It stopped doing that after we moved out west which was just an added bonus until Thing 2/Crash (daughter) ran it under a couple of Honda Accords!

I'll update my Palmer Performance software license to unlock the VW codes now that I have another TDI. Thanks for the mental jump start Doc.
