Is there any way to use the new better solenoids that the newer trucks had?

Everything electrical will interchange, the speed sensors, 94up force control solenoid and the 94up style internal wiring harness/case plug was the biggest improvements. I dont think they changed the 1-2/2-3/TCC solenoids much.

The 94up force control solenoid is the tricky part, to do it right in a 91-93 4l80, the valve body needs a vent hole drilled and a hole in the seperator plate needs plugged.

That sounds like fun.

What about putting in a mechanical valve body so there is no electronics?

The best adviice so far is "get the ATSG manual". I rebuilt the 4L80E in my 95 bucket truck with the help of a GM mechanic. Well he was supposed to help. He said he would and he said he had all the tools too. Turns out he was there for about 15min of the whole process and I was on my own the rest of the time. That was the first automatic I ever tackled and it works fine. I credit the manual, not my friend. BTW, I got my parts at A&Reds transmission. Very helpful people! Don't know how the prices stack up, but the service was worth any extra cost! Just my $.02 from experience

I'm getting both the book and video. My brother just finished doing a 700r4 and said the video helped way more than the book.

Restoguy, what'd the rebuild cost you? I've got a 96 4L80 with reverse gone that I'd like to rebuild. Never been into a tranny before...famous last words...

If my memory serves correctly it was in the neighborhood of $675. That included a rebuilt TC, all electronics, book, kit w/ALL the bushings, and a seperator plate. It didn't need any hard parts, luckily.

Id like to rebuild a 4L80E one of these days. I noticed they sell different pumps for different years.
