Some of you may remeber when i bought this truck a couple years ago, well it is finally at my house and i just finished pulling the motor. i will begin the tear down process and share my findings.

here is what i know so far.

here is a link to an old thread if any one wants to know the whole story.

here is what i have sence come up with. I think the whole no start problem came from a passlock malfunction and the PO burned up at least one starter and a set of batts trying to start it. he then used ether ( way to much ) and blew a big hole in something.

In my attempts to get it started i used ether as well but from the very beging there was way to much Blow by that smell way to strongly of Diesel/ether.

hope fully i can get started tearing it down tomorow

P.S. My fieance told me that it has to be done by our wedding which is in 41 days so im in a hurry

Red flag is in the up position Josh... Be careful

she knows that i will be slow as hell about it if she dong give me an ultimatum but i would really like it back together by then as well.

if the motors shot i just got to find a replacement other wise if i can rebuild i got to get it out to machin shop ASAP

todays progess

first off this motor is very rusty. striped the heads of two of the turbo to manifold bolts off with a box end wrench and my hands. then i went to remove the manifolds from the heads and broke 4 bolts on turbo side and 2 on the other. The Gp Wire heat shields are complety rusted away. I think these where so rusty beacouse of the missing inner fender rubbers and the fact that the PO plowed snow with it and it had a sander on the flatbed.

All the accesory brackets and every thing top side came off very easily.

since the 4 bolts that broke on the turbo side are rusted into the manifold i am having trouble getting them off came close but had to stop to go to a meeting with the minester about the wedding and then dinner at my parents. so i didnt get the heads off but they will for sure tomorow.

here are some pics

It seems the Murf and company made this there home for a while DSC00538.jpg
Iv never seen a 506 block before but where they all cast to accept a center mount turbo? DSC00548.JPG
These dots dont seem to make any sort of pattern like the ones on my 599 didDSC00543.JPG

if i remember the date codes correctly this should be an oct of 99 block, correct?

Don't you just love the smell of rust in the morning? :D

(diesel slugs subtitle- Rust... What rust..)

I wouldn't worry too much about the broken ex bolts.. Needed new ones anyway.. Now those manifolds.. You can tell the ol' truck was a worker. Plow trucks really 'get it'..

the bolts breaking off isnt the problem the problem is that after an hour of work with pry bars, cold chisels, BFH's, a full can of PB, and a cut off wheel the turbo side manifold is still not removed

I have a set of manifolds if you need some, PM me and I'm sure we can work out a deal.

Sucks that they are that rusted, probably warped too. Did you try heating them red hot with a torch?

i will probably be in contact with you. i would have but iv been out of gas in my bottles for 9mnths just never can find the spare cash and time to go get them filled but i damn sure will now

got it apart heads off and oil pan off no massive holes but do have some odd stuff. got to go to the bar now for a birthday party will post pics later

visualy i did nt see any major ones the messed up push rod is the one that goes with the valve that is all rusty and the messed up lifter hold down. the more i get into this motor i think that it is not the orginal for this truck. all the rods and caps are stamped, two of them are pictured they are in no numerical order, there are paint marker marks on the pistons, and the valve covers and the oil pan where put on with some sort of rtv and no gasket. as far as i know they came from the factory with gaskets. the other odd thing is as in my previouse post the dots in the vally do not make a 506 as they should on a 506 block. do i have a china block or is this an early navstar cast motorm it does have the generals bars in the vally

Yeah, been here, prolly a little worse than yours. You gonna buy new heads or rebuild? For the price Clearwater has new castings for 500-600, they dont charge core upfront either!

Looks like a hone job, new rings, inspect bearings, new seals, fire, AND ROLL COAL. It could be a sloppy rebuild and a push rod that was put in wrong or something (im no expert on what causes things to screw up in the engine.

Check cylinder 8 for cracks/hotspots, that would be a reason to get a different block.

Got the block all striped down and ready to take to the machine shop later this week. But im not sure that my heads are going to be usable, i do have a spare set but im wondering if its worth the money. i was just looking around on the ebay and i came across a listing from Ted's Truck's and Stuff and they have hummve motors for sale but it seems to me there was some bad reports over dealing with them but i cant seem to find anything searching. whats the word on them the price dosent seem that bad they are supposed to be navstar cast complete long blocks from 06 to 08

You MIGHT get a bad block (water from sitting outside mostly) from teds BUT if you do they have been pretty good about sending a replacement and usually let you keep your bad block which can normally be bored and rebuilt.

If you get one most pull the heads and check the bores, maybe throw in a set of turbo precups and injectors, and head studs and let it smoke!
