I'd would have done the full solenoid kit change, it's cheap
Possibly shift solenoids, but you have some done now, hopefully it not major.
Lol, this way you've covered most bases, I lost gears, as well (felt like neutral) stop, then it would work again, that kit cured it, now 3 years later all...
Also, just throwing it out there, for another easy look..
Harmonic balancer pulleys will tick when the rubbers dead inside..
Make sure that's not tapping on the bolt heads
I'd also say starter don't seem well, or possible combo starter/fly wheel
And dont worry about the oil on the starter, hehe , mines always covered oil, I bet starter burning up as ya crank
I had issues with mine losing gear on city streets,"3rd and 4th gear lost" (sometimes hwy) sometimes I'd have to pull over and bam, would be "normal"

once when I had no oil pressure, I shut her off right way, replaced oil filter and worked.... Figure throw something out there, these problems can drive one crazy ..,
