I'm finally getting to the point where I've got sort of a list made up. I didn't want to get too far ahead and end up with something I didn't really need, or find out I needed something I didn't have. Here's my list so far. I just need some other eyes and brains to make sure I'm not missing...
O.K., another update and more questions.
I pulled the pistons in the 6.2 yesterday and did some honing. Today I cleaned the 6.2 pistons and rods. I also laid out the 6.2 rod bearings and got a pic of them. Rod bearings #1,3,5,&7 had these numbers stamped into the back side. Top row- GM4...
Thanks WW. I was really hoping somebody with way more experience than I have would chime in and say that what I was thinking about would work in a pinch. It definitely is not what I would like to do, but what I am having to do. I just need to pull the pistons now and make my final list of needs...
I was changing out valve seals and I think I found a "smoking gun". So far I haven't found anything else I could call bad, until I started replacing valve guide seals on the passenger side head. Then I noticed the end of the stem for #6 exhaust valve. When I first started hearing the "collapsed...
WW, I'm not a mechanic, but in my opinion bearings provide a softer, non galling, wear surface for the crank journals to mate to. However, the very small oil film between the bearing and the journal is the most important item as it provides the "slipperyness", like ball bearings, that is needed...
I really appreciate your answers, and I'm carefully listening and weighing the options.
I'm getting ready to leave the house now, but I have a question first. I'm going to need rings and bearings, what brands will give the best results and life? If you were to ask me advice about...
Good info ak. Unless the cylinders are bored to get back to a clean, smooth surface I agree with you about the 6.5, and that is definitely out of my pocketbook ability at this time. I will do what you suggest with the valves. I don't have any tools for removing the springs, so I will have to go...
By the way, my current thoughts, considering what I have found. Get this 6.2 back together and running as good as possible without spending a lot of money on it, so that I have a reliable pickup to drive. Then, in the future, as funds will allow, do a thorough rebuild on the 6.5.

I re-read BowtieButler's thread where he re-built on a budget. Great thread, and very inspiring, however my budget is even tighter than his.
I got the 6.2 mostly torn down. The main webs look good except for one possible small crack about 5/16ths inch long in the center web. How do you tell if...
North CA? Large area, how far north did you get? You weren't very many hours away from my area! It's roughly 8 hours on I-5 from home to my wife's relatives in Sacramento.
Don
That's good to know Leroy. Thanks!!
However, when I removed them they were in place either direction, not all facing one way. More reason to think this motor has been apart before, and not carefully reassembled.

Here's pics of the passenger bank part of the block, with the pistons still in place. The first pic is of the rear most cylinder on the left. The second pic has the front cylinder on the right. What I'm questioning is the differing pattern left by the flame front on the top of the piston. Any...
Here's a pic of a pushrod. This morning I took one, wiped it down, and tried to push a oxy-acetylene tip cleaner through the hole in the side. What I found was that it is only an indent in the surface. What I find puzzling is the purpose for the indent. If it is used to pin the tip of the rod...
I will get some pics tomorrow morning. Hopefully I can figure out how to post them. I do have a lot of pics of other parts also, main webs, etc, but none yet of the pistons and cylinders. I will need to clean them up first though as they are very oily and black at the moment.
I was looking at...
Well, after all the days lost to other things that had to be done, I finally got the pistons out of the 6.5 this evening. Up to this point I had been real hopeful. Just by visual inspection, to this untrained eye, when I checked the main webs I could only see one very small crack, no more than...
I just can't imagine that kind of temps. Here in western Oregon we melt when it gets into the upper 90's. Yesterday was in the low to mid 90's. Today is supposed to hit about 100. Tomorrow about 105. Friday about 103. then it's supposed to start a gradual cooling trend down to the mid 80's...
Sorry Leroy, I wasn't very clear in specifying what I was talking about. I was thinking in terms of the set of rings you have that are without the second ring.

O.K., I'm back home now. Yesterday and this morning I spent doing garden work that had to be done to keep the weeds from overtaking the good plants. I got a call from the guy rebuilding the transmission. It went well, except he had to replace the planetaries (?I think is what he said?) as the...
