Installed Aux cooler, Derale plate & fin type, piped from radiator into cooler, then to transmission, made transmission pump fluid to verify supply and return so lines not reversed.
Odometer says 274k, I was told that motor wasn't original, replaced at just over 100k and transmission was...
When it is in work mode it's towing a 20' gooseneck flatbed with either equipment or scrap cars. Then there's the stock trailer, not used much for livestock lately, moved more firewood and household goods with it. Towing probably between 5k to 7k gross. And then there's the camper... 30' Jayco...
So, after finally had enough of wheezing, gutless wonder towing runs, overheating pulling up hills, mysteriouly leaking coolant with no puddles or signs of fluid and generally every typical complaint echoed by failing GM 6.5 diesel drivers... I put the beast in the barn for a tear-down.
Pulled...
This one has 4 cylinder diesel, 195 cubic inch, rated about 55HP. Tractor was made in England when Case owned the David Brown company.
We had a 1412 on the farm when I was a kid, 6 cylinder with a turbo. It was the only tractor my dad bought new from a dealer.
Picked up off Craig's List, David Brown 990, a little rough on the eyes but runs and drives. Far as I can tell everything works so far. Changed all the fluids and filters, fixing broken bolt on front axle, gotta remake tie rod shorter. Picked up for less than half average price on Tractorhouse...
Update: March- in like a lion... so they say. anyway, got some new oil cooler lines in while the steering pump and bracket was out. Lines were a tight fit, had to disconnect left side engine mount and raise up with porta-power under the oil pan. Would have been worse if power steering pump and...
Started pulling pump Friday after first round of clearing driveway. Foot and a half of wet, heavy spring snow, mixed with mud, yuck! Got steering pump off and then lost power before could get any further.
Thanks for the filter tip, picked one up today. Got the cheapest pump I could find because this ones the first in line for trade in on a newer truck... hopefully.
North East way of life... one inch of snow on the roads means three inches of salt loaded sand must be applied.
Got all the main parts from auto salvage, axle shaft, steering knuckle with bearing, rotor and caliper for $200 bucks.
Got a new upper arm with ball joint, new ball joint for the lower...
I was always taught if you can make "out of position" welding to in position weld to do it, so sometimes it gets a little weird but the welds are the best!
Re-attached new fabricated mount to existing angle steel, new chains, lifts nicely and now "floats" with terrain instead of being...
I cut off all the bad "welds" and figured out a way to mount the blade to the lift angles that would allow for some flex and give in the lift action so the blade wouldn't be forced to be rigid in it's work.
Made these angle plates to support the existing 3-pt bar at the bottom of the old...
So my neighbor brings his JD 420 up to the barn for some "weld the blade back on" work.
I welded the blade rails on back in the summer when he was trying to use it as a bull dozer and it failed. I told him it was prolly only goodfor snow pushing and he agreed. But, he still used it for a dozer...
