What are some of the good free anti-virus programs out now? I'm currently using AVG, and there latest version REALLY slowed my computer down and my wifes laptop as well. Were both using older PC's, so we need something that doesn't use alot of systems resources if one exists.

For free, Microsoft Security Essentials is my pick. It is a little resource heavy though. Not as bad as AVG in my opinion.

I've been using Avast lately ... it seems to be much less resource-heavy and it seems to be catching everything I throw at it.

It seems that I've got another bug somewhere. It's blocking any downloads...

Crapola...

X3 on Avast. I have been running it on two machines of my own for the past two years with no problems. I really like that it updates any time it needs to. Sometimes more than once a day.

I'm with Jeff and Mike. Microsoft SE is always running and I used to use AVG. I also like to use Spybot a few times a week to clean up whatever the Microsoft missed. IMO it's the perfect combination.

I use MSE and no probs. so far.

The issue you may have is that your old security program is rejecting a new install because it see's it as a threat. You will have to un-install the old one and then download the new anti-virus program that you choose.

The best way to speed up your computer is to wipe the hard drive clean every year. Back up all programs and files first on an ext.hard drive and cleanse H/D and re-install O/S and then your files. Computer will be as fast as when you bought it.

Hope this helps.

I've uninstalled my Marlware software but the downloads are still being blocked.

Last time I had this problem, Jim somehow put it into an email and that was the only way that I could open it or get it saved.

My problem is my desktop is a almost 9 years old and was a lower end when it was bought. It simply can't keep up with todays programs even with upgraded ram and video card. Scripts in webpages bring it to a crawl anymore, and it drives me nuts.

No go still Jim with both of those links. Something is stopping me from downloading anything like that.

I have no problem downloading porn though...:hihi:

You can block scripts from running in firefox with an add on called "noscript".

Works great for me. noticed a nice boos tin page loading too.

of course, some of the "features" on web sites no longer function.....:agreed:
