IF...........you get rid of the junk DMF, and get a real clutch. Otherwise, it will not be going anywhere for very long.

I've still got the dmf, well it's the second one, and it's holding up ok. I don't run the piss out of it because I don't want ot have to buy a new clutch, but it's not too bad.

With the Ally towing our 22' and 24' cattle trailers it downshifts on hills and and looses some speed unless you redline it. My ZF6's will pull the same hills with the same load all day in 6th and never have to run high RPM's. The only time I have to downshift is when I'm towing 25K and pulling a big hill I'll grab 5th.

interesting, yet my parents(moms) 01 pulls great up hills without a redline needed, sits right at about 2200 rpms and just seems like the trailer is not even there. I wonder if something was wrong with the trucks you mentioned... there trailer is right at 20k. The only standard diesel I have towed with was a 94 powerstroke 5spd non turbo... so thats my only comparison..... I really would like to try out a zf truck, when i am in the market again some day that will be what im looking for! they sure are hard to find last weekend i hit up all the lots with trucks with no luck... not that i will be buying of course but really wanted to test one...
 
jcool: What kind of hills do you have in NC? I've never been there so I'm curious if they are like ours. The hills I'm talking are 1/2mile hills that are probably 4-5 percent grade.
Dads truck was bought new by him and has always been the way it is. Never had any issues with it.

There a lot of ZF's in KY.

My DMF didn't last 10K. Cheyenne19,I don't know how you are so fortunate. Maybe I just don't know how to be easy on one.
 
Maybe I'm just lucky, I haven't had any injector troubles either. When I did tear up my DMF it was doing burnouts in 3rd and 4th gear.

:yikes:............what kind of trailer weights 20K?
 
the hills in nc on the east are non existent, in the mountains their are a few that are pretty steep like 5 degree for I think 2 miles the one I am thinking of, the trailer-sorry its 28ft and my dad forgot the weight but its shaped like a brick. as for my truck i towed cross country the biggest uhaul they have fully loaded. went up that hill in az that the lly's o/h on and its all over that coolmyduramax site. i dont think i even came out of overdrive but then again wasnt paying much attention. lets not talk about the 94's towing abilities, it compares to my 86 s-10...

that would be interesting to see, stock it may be the zf, if either were built i bet the alli would take the win. fun factor at the track.... zf..... but if the zf is anything like any truck manual i have driven, its real hard to get a good quick shift in.
 
The DMF is the weak link in the ZF6 trucks, not the clutch necessarily. If you are consistently using a tuner, I don't think there is much difference between the ZF and Ally. All of my buddies with the Allison have limped their tranny running a tune. If you want to run high hp, you're gonna have to mod either transmission.

As a general rule, the ally will outshift the ZF6, as for racing. The ZF6 is not set up for fast, smooth shifts.

The DMF will not hold up, even without extra power. It might hold 35K miles, maybe even 50K, but that would be pushing it......as the odds go.
 
dads stock 01 lasted just over 30k with only pulling the gooseneck once in a while. and dad always drove stick pickups his whole life, so he knew how if anyone did. his int. pickup and travelall both went over 100k with original clutches.
