Your thoughts on my frame rust please

Truck is from 1996, and has clearly spent some time in some winter locations(why don't people wash their trucks properly in the winter!!!). The bad rust is obviously from the rear wheels back. Everything forward is either just light surface rust, or the undercoat coming off.

I'm mainly concerned with my rear leaf hangers, as well as where my trailer hitch bolts on. There is some bad flaking from the frame and around the whole rear hanger.

Those big chunks you see, I'm almost 100% come from behind the bumper, as it looks the worst. That's obviously not my main concern as that can always be replaced. But it's the rear leaf hanger and around where the hitch mounts that I'm concerned most about.

I want to make this thing last and I am considering cleaning and sealing.

Your thoughts on how bad my rust is, and how long it should last if I keep it clean. I've heard I can slop on some of that POR15 and that should buy me some time.

Thanks

I think I'd do a bed off resto on that. If need be you can weld on some repair pieces. POR15 is a great product for protecting frames like that. One or 2 restoration suppliers (like LMC) might even have repair sections.

I'm with Mike on this one.

Pull off the bed and bumper and bring it to a shop to get sand blasted. Spray it with some good primer or rust paint and put er together. Good weekend project that will give you peace of mind.

bed off, knock off the loose stuff(Harbor Freight has a lot of crap but their pneumatic needle scalers work great for removing rust), make any repairs that might be needed and if you have a Chemsearch rep in your area, order a couple of bottles of Conquest Rust Converter. Brush or spray it on the entire frame/underside and then paint or undercoat.

I have used the NAPA chassis saver rust convertor sealer paint. It worked rather well I thought. Longevity dont know that yet. Just did it in May. I looked into POR 15, but my f-i-l is a body man for years and he said you need a big gun tip to get it spray right, if your spraying it. Definatly take the bed off though makes thing alot easier to get at. As for being a 96 that dont look too bad to me, but I live in the rust belt................
