Not sure what to try next. This is the early 80's 6.2 that I dropped in to replace my blown 6.5.
Smoke is a light black haze. Looks bad in headlights at night though. I can see that is puffs and is not an even smoke. No it isn't using smoke signals... But it is sooting up the fender and trailer badly.
6.2 IP 1/2 turn up with 6.5 injectors. Injectors re-tested good at shop before install and all pop in same close pressure range.
Dime advance on IP. By sound it is about right on. Runs smoother and has a good diesel clack now. IP cold advance and lever advance tests pass.
This still put EGT's at sustained 1400 at altitude. (12-1300 in Phoenix.) Suspect EGT gauge whacked as the engine would have blown by now. Bill Heath says it is impossible to get 1400 EGT out of a 6.2 DB2 unless something is really bad.
Turned up turbo 4 turns on TM to get 14 PSI as it was down to 12 PSI from the 6.5 adjustment. This got me less smoke at higher RPM and lower EGT's by 100 degrees.
Oil use appears to be 1 QT in 1000 miles.
I am down 3 MPH from the 6.5 power level. 63 vs 60 same hills.
What I don't understand is letting off the throttle by 1/4 does not drop EGT's or reduce the smoke.
I have a LH exhaust manifold on order due to a leak and warping. Had to drill out the holes to get it to bolt back on - even the head it came off of...
Are the early 6.2 heads restrictive or do I have a bad IP? Chain didn't look that bad, but, did not test it. Supposed to be a low mile 30K take out and this one looks like it was rebuilt from clean rockers and new oil pan RTV. Heads were off and cyl walls looked good with cross hatch in all of them.
Ideas?
