First my truck is a 1995 Chevrolet 2500 6.5 TD 4X4.
Well i just bought this truck from a guy who used it on his ranch but it has only been driven on the street for the past 6 years or so. Well when i bought it he had not used the 4wd in a long time. I put in high worked fine put it in low did fine. Bought the truck only used the 4wd twice just to see how it did.

Well now when i switch it in to 4wd it goes in fine (pulls to the right 2 bearings froze up getting that fixed today) But when i go to switch out of 4wd it wont. It will clunk like it does but then it seems like it goes back in? After shifting in and out of 4wd for 20 min it will finely go into 2wd. (seems like the shifter is'nt working)

Any ideas what is wrong?

Thanks for tha help

you're having the opposite problem i'm having. I can't shift into 4wd on the fly, but when i'm in 4wd, i can shift right out of it. I hope someone can answer both of our questions.

Ok well i got the bearings that were froze up replaced. Now the 4wd is riding better (still pulling right), I tried again today to see if it helped it disengage ( I know long shot) It didnt and still did want to disengage. But i did notice when i stick it back 2wd its like it isnt totally in 4wd.... Like it drives different etc. Finely got iy out of 4wd drive by sticking it in 2wd, and putting it in reverse it poped out right then.

Any one have any ideas? Im about to take it in just trying to get an idea to what it is so that dont screw me over by telling me BS... thanks again

Any results getting this one fixed? I have no idea since I dont have a 4wd, but its something you might post a link to in the 6.5 section.

If they are bound up a little they won't disengage 4wd right away. Sometimes all it takes is letting off the gas and coasting a little, or stop and back up a little bit.

treegump: Sounds like your front axle 4wd actuator is going south on you.

This has been resolved. Turns out the PO had to different size tires on the truck (235 front and 245 on back) So it was causing the front to bind up. As soon as i put new tires on the front my actuator went out So idk if it totally fixed or not.

And i found out that what you described is exactly what I have to do to get it to engage while driving. With my ford and dodge, i could pull the manual lever right into 4wd and it'd activate, so the letting off the throttle is a little different.

I have a 1990 GMC sierra pickup. Just today, i was comin outta field after retreiving a deer for a friend at our huntin cmp, and the 4wd wouldnt disengage fully. The lights go off, and it feels like it disengages, but makes a rattling noise and Im unsure whats wrong. It doesnt make the noise when its in 4wd High or 4wd Low just 2wd High. Someone plz lemme know what u think could be wrong

If you're going up onto dry pavement they can be difficult to come out of 4wd. Try shifting out at the exact moment you let off the throttle. Or shift out/let off while still in the field.

we had also gone muddin with it through some swamps, and then up into the sticks so i asked a friend. He said look to see if somethin is jammed up into the manual shift on the transmission cause that could be makin it stick
