just got an email from a 6.5er ......

I didn't like how much it blew black smoke so a friend of mine out there took me to a certified GM diesel mechanic who wired the wastegate closed. He said it would increase power and stop the smoke and was he right! It ran alot better and no smoke at all. It's been that way for over 70000 miles without issue.

i was wondering..... "what?"

so it is like that turbo is constantly running at the maximum possible psi for the current rpms - even if you let of the throttle ? just how bad is that ?
constantly running lean, but that should be taken care of via ECM right ?

Where he would run into trouble is WOT under load, then there could be a serious over boost.

I wired mine shut once when the vac pump give out to get home, It built boost really fast. I watched the gauge to keep it at safe levels.

He's been lucky to go that long.

honestly i ran mine for 60,000+ with the WG wired shut and never saw boost higher than 14psi and that was when i was pushing it really hard

if i didnt have a boost gauge i would have never done it but i put the gauge in and didnt have time to make a T/M so i just put some bailing wire on it and twisted her tight.
im ganna make on before i put the motor back in though

Like Leo said, only under load.

If he puts a big trailer on the back and finds a hill, he'll see some MONSTER EGTs and big-time boost...

With nothing he can do about it; backing off the throttle under those conditions just slows you down.

Oh, and there's no 'running lean' with a diesel... it'll just have lots of air.

As long as he doesn't load it up and find a hill, he should be OK - but it's not optimal, by any means.

With the amount of fuel delivered, The highest I've seen is 18, with less back pressure you can get away with a higher boost. At least that seems to be the case.

I had mine wired shut for about a week until I built a turbomaster. But I am not a turbomaster fan at all cause under a hard load I could still build 16-18 pounds of boost even when the wastegate opened. I am deffinently going ATT on my new motor cause it is deffinently much safer of a turbo.

Wired shut or too tight on the Turbo Master all has to do with the amount of fuel the engine gets. Not enough fuel and you will not build boost with the WG shut. The computer, if equipped, may be shutting down the fuel from an over boost condition and thus the long mileage that way.

I know with my my turbo master that it takes a load and high gear to peg out the boost floored. 9-10 in lower gears any RPM and at low RPM in high gear loaded it will spike to 14 but back down at higher RPM. Went higher till I turned the TM down. Course I am throwing more fuel at it too.
